Thursday Evening at All Hallows (January 29, 2026)

Welcome to Thursday Evenings at All Hallows.

This evening’s service is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Rosa Ann McGarr Crass who entered the nearer presence of God on January 18, 2026. Rosa was a longtime member of St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Benton, Kentucky and more recently a member of Christ Chapel (Anglican) in Fairdealing, Kentucky. She was a kind and generous soul who loved flowers and church music.

This evening’ message is a distillation of what J. C. Ryle, the first Bishop of Liverpool wrote about John 14:1-3 in his Expository Thoughts on John, an exposition on John’s Gospel, Like many of Bishop Ryle’s works it was written to be read aloud to a Sunday school class or other gathering.

Silence

I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.
John 11:25-6

What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, God has prepared for those who love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth
is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and
just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:8-9

Let us now confess our sins to almighty God.

Silence

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much
the devices and the desires of our own hearts.
we have offended against your holy laws,
we have left undone what we ought to have done,
and we have done what we ought not to have done.
Yet, good Lord, have mercy on us;
restore those who are penitent,
according to your promises declared
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Grant, most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober lives,
to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Merciful Lord,
grant to your faithful people pardon and peace,
that we may be cleansed from all our sins,
and serve you with a quiet mind;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Open our lips, O Lord;
And we shall declare your praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
Let us praise the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.

1 The King of love my shepherd is,
Whose goodness fails me never;
I nothing lack if I am his,
And he is mine forever.

2 Where streams of living water flow
With gentle care he leads me,
And where the verdant pastures grow,
With heav'nly food he feeds me.

3 Perverse and foolish I have strayed,
But yet in love he sought me,
And on his shoulder gently laid,
And home, rejoicing, brought me.

4 In death's dark vale I fear no ill
With you, dear Lord, beside me;
Your rod and staff my comfort still,
Your cross before to guide me.

5 You spread a table in my sight,
Your saving grace bestowing;
And O what joy and true delight
From your pure chalice flowing!

6 And so through all the length of days
Your goodness fails me never:
Good Shepherd, may I sing your praise
Within your house forever.

Silence

For your Name’s sake, O God,
lead us in the paths of righteousness
and let your mercy follow us
that we may dwell with you for ever. Amen.

In ev’ry age, O Lord,
you have been our refuge;
you have been our refuge.

In ev’ry age, O Lord,
you have been our refuge;
you have been our refuge.

1 You return us to dust,
saying “Return, O children, to earth.”
For to you a thousand years are like
yesterday passed,
or a watch of the night.

In ev’ry age, O Lord,
you have been our refuge;
you have been our refuge.

2 You sweep us away in a dream.
At dawn we are like morning grass
that rise to the morning sun,
then withers and fades.

In ev’ry age, O Lord,
you have been our refuge;
you have been our refuge.

*3 Teach us to treasure our days.
Give wisdom to our hearts,
Return, O Lord, how long must we wait?
Pity your servants.

In ev’ry age, O Lord,
you have been our refuge;
you have been our refuge.

4 Fill our daybreak with your love
that we may rejoice in song.
May your gracious eye watch over us
and the work of our hands.

In ev’ry age, O Lord,
you have been our refuge;
you have been our refuge.

*Omitted on the video.

Silence

Eternal Father,
our refuge from generation to generation,
in Christ your salvation has dawned for your people:
prosper the work of our hands
that the promise of your glorious kingdom
may be fulfilled in our midst;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Psalm 121 from the 1650 Scottish Psalter.

1 I to the hills will lift mine eyes,
from whence doth come mine aid.
My safety cometh from the Lord,
who heav'n and earth hath made.

2 Thy foot he'll not let slide, nor will
he slumber that thee keeps.
Behold, he that keeps Israel,
he slumbers not, nor sleeps.

3 The Lord thee keeps, the Lord thy shade
on thy right hand doth stay:
The moon by night thee shall not smite,
nor yet the sun by day.

4 The Lord shall keep thy soul; he shall
preserve thee from all ill.
Henceforth thy going out and in
God keep for ever will.

Silence

Lord, ever watchful and faithful,
we look to you to be our defence
and we lift up our hearts to know your help;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

A reading from the Gospel according to John
John14:1-11

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

Silence

In My Father’s House

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.”

These words have been a source of comfort and encouragement for generations of believing Christians.

With these words Jesus offers us the only remedy for a troubled heart. That remedy is to put the full weight of our faith and trust in him.

With these words Jesus assures us that there will be room in heaven for all believers, room for the weakest believer as well as the strongest,

With these words Jesus tells us he will be with us in heaven. He will be in our midst for ever.

With these words Jesus tells us he is preparing a place for us. We will not be like surprise guests. We will be expected and we will find a ready welcome.

With these words Jesus assures us he will return. When he comes again, he will raise us from the dead and take us to be with him.

These words remind us that we have something the world cannot give us or take away from us. We have a true Friend in Jesus while we live and a true home in heaven when we die.

Silence

Open this link in a new tab to hear Kate Bluett’s paraphrase of the Magnificat, “Mary’s Hymn of Praise.”

1 My soul proclaims God’s greatness,
rejoicing in the Lord
who looks upon my meekness,
as ages will behold.
Now God does great things for me,
and holy is God’s name.
My spirit sings God’s wonders,
and oh! my soul proclaims!

2 In every generation
God pours such mercy down,
shows might before the nations,
and scatters all the proud.
God lifts up all the humble,
casts princes down in shame.
My spirit sings God’s wonders,
and oh! my soul proclaims!

3 Rejoice now in God’s promise
to Sarah and Abraham
and all of their descendants,
to keep us in God’s hand.
God fills the poor and hungry
and sends the rich away.
My spirit sings God’s wonders,
and oh! my soul proclaims!

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father
almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF PRAYER

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord, show us your mercy,
and grant us your salvation.
Keep our nation under your care,
and guide us in justice and truth.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness,
and make your chosen people joyful.
Lord, save your people,
and bless your inheritance.
Give peace in our time, O Lord,
for you are our help and strength.
Create in us dean hearts, O God,
and renew us by your Holy Spirit.

Almighty and everlasting God, mercifully look on our infirmities;
and in all our dangers and necessities stretch out your right hand
to help and defend us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal God, from whom all holy desires, all good purposes,
and all just works proceed: give to your servants that peace
which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to
obey your commandments, and that free from the fear of our
enemies we may pass our time in trust and quietness;
through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Lighten our darkness, Lord, we pray: and in your great
mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Open this link in a new tab to hear Georg Neumark’s “If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee.”

1 If thou but suffer God to guide thee
And hope in Him through all thy ways,
He’ll give thee strength, whate’er betide thee.
And bear thee through the evil days.
Who trusts in God’s unchanging love
Builds on the Rock that naught can move.

2 What can these anxious cares avail thee,
These never-ceasing moans and sighs?
What can it help if thou bewail thee
O’er each dark moment as it flies?
Our cross and trials do but press
The heavier for our bitterness.

3 Be patient and await His leisure
In cheerful hope, with heart content
To take whate’er thy Father’s pleasure
And His discerning love hath sent,
Nor doubt our inmost wants are known
To Him Who chose us for His own.

4 God knows full well when times of gladness
Shall be the needful thing for thee.
When He has tried thy soul with sadness
And from all guile has found thee free,
He comes to thee all unaware
And makes thee own His loving care.

5 Nor think amid the fiery trial
That God hath cast thee off unheard,
That He whose hopes meet no denial
Must surely be of God preferred.
Time passes and much change doth bring
And sets a bound to everything.

6 All are alike before the Highest;
’Tis easy for our God, we know,
To raise thee up, though low thou liest,
To make the rich man poor and low.
True wonders still by Him are wrought
Who setteth up and brings to naught.

7 Sing, pray, and keep His ways unswerving,
Perform thy duties faithfully,
And trust His Word; though undeserving,
Thou yet shalt find it true for thee.
God never yet forsook in need
The soul that trusted Him indeed.

Holy and loving Father,
you gave us life when you created us,
and in your redeeming love you have given us new life in
Christ Jesus.
We give you thanks for your servant, Rosa.
In faith and trust we leave her in your keeping;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who died and rose again to save us,
and now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit
in glory for ever.
Amen.

Almighty God,
Father of all mercies and giver of all comfort;
deal graciously, we pray, with those who mourn,
that, casting all their care on you,
they may know the consolation of your love;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

O God,
the maker and redeemer of all mankind,
we pray for the coming of your kingdom,
that in the last day,
when you bring together all things in Christ,
we with all who have died in him
may enjoy the fulfilment of your promises;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Grant us, Lord, wisdom and grace
to use aright the time that is left to us here on earth.
While we have time lead us to repent of our sins,
and to do what we have left undone.
Strengthen us to follow in the steps of your Son Jesus
Christ
along the way of your eternal kingdom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Silence may be kept.

Those present may offer their own prayers and thanksgivings, either silently or aloud.

Almighty God, you have promised to hear the petitions of
those who ask in your Son’s name: mercifully accept us who
have now made our prayers to you; and grant us those things
which we have asked in faith according to your will; through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

In darkness and in light,
in trouble and in joy,
help us, heavenly Father,
to trust your love,
to serve your purpose,
and to praise your name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

1 Thou art the Way: by thee alone
From sin and death we flee;
And they who would the Father seek
Must seek him, Lord, by thee.

2 Thou art the Truth: thy word alone
True wisdom can impart;
Thou only canst inform the mind
And purify the heart.

3 Thou art the Life: the rending tomb
Proclaims thy conquering arm;
And those who put their trust in thee
Nor death nor hell shall harm.

4 Thou art the Way, the Truth, the Life:
Grant us that Way to know,
That Truth to keep, that Life to win,
Whose joys eternal flow.
