Thursday Evening at All Hallows (January 15, 2026)

Welcome to Thursday Evenings at All Hallows.

In this evening’s service we return to the previous order of service, an adaption of Morning and Evening Prayer Order One from A Prayer Book for Australia (1999). We also return to our examination of Jesus’ teaching and its implications for us. In this evening’s message we consider one of the implications of the prayer which Jesus taught his disciples.

GATHER IN GOD’S NAME

Silence

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.
John 4:24

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth
is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and
just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:8-9

Let us now confess our sins to almighty God.

Silence

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much
the devices and the desires of our own hearts.
we have offended against your holy laws,
we have left undone what we ought to have done,
and we have done what we ought not to have done.
Yet, good Lord, have mercy on us;
restore those who are penitent,
according to your promises declared
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Grant, most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober lives,
to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Merciful Lord,
grant to your faithful people pardon and peace,
that we may be cleansed from all our sins,
and serve you with a quiet mind;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Open our lips, O Lord;
And we shall declare your praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
Let us praise the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.

Come all you servants of the Lord (bless the Lord)
Who stand by night in the house of the Lord

Lift up your hands to the Holy Place
Lift up your hands, and bless the Lord
Lift up your hands to the Holy Place
Lift up your hands, and bless the Lord, bless the Lord

2 May the Lord bless you from Zion
He who made heaven and earth (heaven and earth)
May the Lord bless you from Zion
He who made heaven and earth (heaven and earth)

Lift up your hands to the Holy Place
Lift up your hands, and bless the Lord
Lift up your hands to the Holy Place
Lift up your hands, and bless the Lord

Lift up your hands, and bless the Lord
Lift up your hands to the Holy Place
Lift up your hands, and bless the Lord, bless the Lord

1 My Shepherd, you supply my need,
most holy is your name;
in pastures fresh you make me feed,
beside the living stream.
You bring my wand'ring spirit back
when I forsake your ways;
you lead me, for your mercy's sake,
in paths of truth and grace.

2 When through the shades of death I walk,
your presence is my stay;
one word of your supporting breath
drives all my fears away.
Your hand in sight of all my foes,
does still my table spread;
my cup with Blessings overflows,
your oil anoints my head.

3 The sure provisions of my God
attend me all my days;
Oh, may Your house be my abode
and all my work be praise.
There would I find a settled rest,
while others go and come;
No more a stranger or a guest,
but like a child at home.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

A reading from the Gospel according to Luke.
Luke 11:1-4

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come.

May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

Silence

What Are We Praying When We Pray,
“Thy Will Be Done…” in the Lord’s Prayer?

When we make a profession of faith in Jesus, we are doing more than accepting Jesus as our Savior, we are owning him as the Lord of our lives, the Lord of how we think, how we feel, how we speak, and how we act.

By “owning” Jesus I am not talking about defeating someone completely, being better than someone else, or performing extremely well, an informal use of the word “own” we hear banded about a lot these days.

I am talking about acknowledging that Jesus is the Lord of our lives. We “own” Jesus in the sense that we own a child, “Yes, he’s my child.” Or a sibling, “Yes, he’s my little brother.” We acknowledge that a particular relationship exists between the other person and ourselves.

In Jesus’ case we are claiming him as the one who has the authority to exercise complete power over all areas of our lives. “Yes, Jesus is my Lord.” We are also acknowledging that we are one of his disciples.

When we say the Lord’s Prayer, we pray, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as in heaven.”

Jesus is the Lord of God’s kingdom. We enter God’s kingdom when we submit to his lordship.

When we are praying the Lord’s Prayer, we are asking God to work in our lives so that we submit more fully to Jesus’ lordship. In other words, Jesus will direct and rule our hearts more completely. This means living Jesus’ way and not our own.

The Lord’s Prayer is not a magic formula. It is not something that we can please God by repeating it numerous times. It is a prayer and a pattern for prayer. When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we are asking God to grant what we are asking him.

We are asking God not only to reign in the lives of other people but also to reign in our lives. We are asking God to enable us as well as other people to do his will.

What is God’s will? We obey Jesus’ teaching as Jesus’ teaching is not just as authoritative as God’s. It is God’ teaching.

Something to chew on as we continue our examination of what Jesus taught and what it means for us.

Silence

Open this link in a new tab to hear Kate Bluett’s paraphrase of the Magnificat, “Mary’s Hymn of Praise.”

1 My soul proclaims God’s greatness,
rejoicing in the Lord
who looks upon my meekness,
as ages will behold.
Now God does great things for me,
and holy is God’s name.
My spirit sings God’s wonders,
and oh! my soul proclaims!

2 In every generation
God pours such mercy down,
shows might before the nations,
and scatters all the proud.
God lifts up all the humble,
casts princes down in shame.
My spirit sings God’s wonders,
and oh! my soul proclaims!

3 Rejoice now in God’s promise
to Sarah and Abraham
and all of their descendants,
to keep us in God’s hand.
God fills the poor and hungry
and sends the rich away.
My spirit sings God’s wonders,
and oh! my soul proclaims!

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father
almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF PRAYER

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord, show us your mercy,
and grant us your salvation.
Keep our nation under your care,
and guide us in justice and truth.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness,
and make your chosen people joyful.
Lord, save your people,
and bless your inheritance.
Give peace in our time, O Lord,
for you are our help and strength.
Create in us dean hearts, O God,
and renew us by your Holy Spirit.

Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people
who call upon you; and grant that we may perceive
and know what things we ought to do, and also may
 have grace and power faithfully to perform them;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal God, from whom all holy desires, all good purposes,
and all just works proceed: give to your servants that peace
which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to
obey your commandments, and that free from the fear of our
enemies we may pass our time in trust and quietness;
through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Amen.

Lighten our darkness, Lord, we pray: and in your great
mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

1 To Christ our King in songs of praise
lift every heart and mind;
unfading light of all our days,
true life of humankind.

2 O Christ our light, draw near and fill
this shadowed soul of mine;
renew my darkened heart and will
to light and life divine.

3 O Christ our life, from death and sin
my forfeit soul set free;
that life laid down, a world to win,
be life indeed for me.

4 O Christ our King, to whom we give
again the life you gave,
tell out by us that all may live
through Christ who died to save.

5 May Christ, our light, our life, our King,
make all our hearts his own,
join all our lives his praise to sing,
and make his glories known!

Silence may be kept.

Those present may offer their own prayers and thanksgivings, either silently or aloud.

Gracious God,
you have given us much today;
grant us also a thankful spirit.
Into your hands we commend ourselves
and those we love.
Be with us still, and when we take our rest
renew us for the service of your Son Jesus Christ.
Amen.

In darkness and in light,
in trouble and in joy,
help us, heavenly Father,
to trust your love,
to serve your purpose,
and to praise your name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

1 Lord of creation, to you be all praise!
Most mighty your working, most wondrous your ways!
Your glory and might are beyond us to tell,
and yet in the heart of the humble you dwell.

2 Lord of all power, I give you my will,
in joyful obedience your tasks to fulfill.
Your bondage is freedom, your service is song;
and, held in your keeping, my weakness is strong.

3 Lord of all wisdom, I give you my mind,
rich truth that surpasses man's knowledge to find.
What eye has not seen and what ear has not heard
is taught by your Spirit and shines from your Word.

4 Lord of all bounty, I give you my heart;
I praise and adore you for all you impart;
your love to inspire me, your counsel to guide,
your presence to cheer me, whatever betide.

5 Lord of all being, I give you my all;
if ever I disown you, I stumble and fall;
but, sworn in glad service your word to obey,
I walk in your freedom to the end of the way.

Repeat verse 5.

THE SENDING FORTH OF GOD’S PEOPLE

The Lord be with you.
And also with you
Let us praise the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
