A reading from the Book of Isaiah
Isaiah 49: 1-7
Everyone, listen,
even you foreign nations
across the sea.
The Lord chose me
and gave me a name
before I was born.
He made my words pierce
like a sharp sword
or a pointed arrow;
he kept me safely hidden
in the palm of his hand.
The Lord said to me,
“Israel, you are my servant;
and because of you
I will be highly honored.”
I said to myself,
“I'm completely worn out;
my time has been wasted.
But I did it for the Lord God,
and he will reward me.”
Even before I was born,
the Lord God chose me
to serve him and to lead back
the people of Israel.
So the Lord has honored me

To God's church in Corinth. Christ Jesus chose you to be his very own people, and you worship in his name, as we and all others do who call him Lord.
My prayer is that God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ will be kind to you and will bless you with peace!
I never stop thanking my God for treating you with undeserved grace by giving you Christ Jesus, who helps you speak and understand so well. Now you are certain that everything we told you about our Lord Christ Jesus is true. You are not missing out on any blessings, as you wait for him to return. And until the day Christ does return, he will keep you completely innocent. God can be trusted, and he chose you to be partners with his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

A reading from the Gospel according to John
John 1: 29-42
The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said:
Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! He is the one I told you about when I said, “Someone else will come, who is greater than I am, because he was alive before I was born.” I didn't know who he was. But I came to baptize you with water, so that everyone in Israel would see him.
I was there and saw the Spirit come down on him like a dove from heaven. And the Spirit stayed on him. Before this I didn't know who he was. But the one who sent me to baptize with water had told me, “You will see the Spirit come down and stay on someone. Then you will know that he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.” I saw this happen, and I tell you that he is the Son of God.
The next day, John was there again, and two of his followers were with him. When he saw Jesus walking by, he said, “Here is the Lamb of God!” John's two followers heard him, and they went with Jesus.
When Jesus turned and saw them, he asked, “What do you want?”
They answered, “Rabbi, where do you live?” The Hebrew word “Rabbi” means “Teacher.”
Jesus replied, “Come and see!” It was already about four o'clock in the afternoon when they went with him and saw where he lived. So they stayed on for the rest of the day.
One of the two men who had heard John and had gone with Jesus was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother and tell him, “We have found the Messiah!” The Hebrew word “Messiah” means the same as the Greek word “Christ.”
Andrew brought his brother to Jesus. And when Jesus saw him, he said, “Simon son of John, you will be called Cephas.” This name can be translated as “Peter.”
Paul concludes this Sunday’s reading from his first letter to the Corinthians with these words, “he chose you to be partners with his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.” Yes, partners with Christ!
In telling the Corinthians to whom he wrote the letter that they are partners with Christ, Paul is telling them that all who respond to Christ’ call in repentance and faith are sharers with Christ and with each other in Christ’s mission on earth. Not just a favored few but all!
Christ’s mission was—and is--to bring about the reconciliation of God and humanity. Although Christ has returned to heaven from where he came, he continues that mission through those whom he calls to himself. Through you and me.
How then do those who respond to Christ’ call in repentance and faith join with Christ in his mission? What do we do?
We tell our family members and relatives, our friends and our neighbors, our coworkers and our fellow students about Jesus, who he is, what he did, and the benefits of having a personal relationship with him.
We demonstrate the difference such a relationship has made in our lives.
We become tangible reflection of the One whom we own as our Saviour and Lord. We embody his teaching and the qualities of his character.
We avoid all forms of evil and do as much good as we can.
We, in Paul’s words, shine like bright stars in the firmament.
By his righteous life, his death and his resurrection, Christ laid the foundation on which we build. Through his grace, the power of the Holy Spirit working in our lives, he enables us to join in his work—that of reconciling God and humanity.
It is an undertaking that we cannot do by ourselves. It is an undertaking that we can do only by grace and by grace alone.

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
born of the Virgin Mary,

but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
