Sundays at All Hallows (January 4, 2026)
Welcome to Sundays at All Hallows.
While some churches move the Feast of the Epiphany to this Sunday, All Hallows will be observing that feast on Thursday, January 8, at our regular service of Evening Prayer on that day.
The order of service for this Sunday is an adaptation of the order of service for Morning and Evening Prayer Second Order of A Prayer Book for Australia (1999). The Old Testament and Gospel readings are those appointed for the Second Sunday after Christmas.
This Sunday’s message takes a look at a core belief of the Christian faith, the doctrine of the incarnation, the embodying of God as a human being.

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth
is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and
just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:8-9
Let us now confess our sins to almighty God.
Silence
God of all mercy,
we humbly admit that we need your help.
We confess that we have wandered from your way.
We have sinned in thought, word and deed
and have failed to do what is right.
You alone can save us.
Have mercy on us,
wipe out our sins and teach us to forgive others.
Bring forth in us the fruit of the Spirit
that we may live the new life to your glory.
This we ask in the name of Jesus our Saviour. Amen.
God desires that none should perish,
but that all should turn to Christ and live.
in response to his call we acknowledge our sins.
God pardons those who humbly repent, and truly believe the gospel.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Heavenly Father,
give us faith to receive your word,
understanding to know what it means,
and the will to put it into practice,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A reading from the Book of Jeremiah
Jeremiah 31:7-14
This is what the Lord says:
‘Sing with joy for Jacob;
shout for the foremost of the nations.
Make your praises heard, and say,
“Lord, save your people,
the remnant of Israel.”
See, I will bring them from the land of the north
and gather them from the ends of the earth.
Among them will be the blind and the lame,
expectant mothers and women in labour;
a great throng will return.
They will come with weeping;
they will pray as I bring them back.
I will lead them beside streams of water
on a level path where they will not stumble,
because I am Israel’s father,
and Ephraim is my firstborn son.
‘Hear the word of the Lord, you nations;
proclaim it in distant coastlands:
“He who scattered Israel will gather them
and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.”
For the Lord will deliver Jacob
and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they.
They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion;
they will rejoice in the bounty of the Lord –
the grain, the new wine and the olive oil,
the young of the flocks and herds.
They will be like a well-watered garden,
and they will sorrow no more.
Then young women will dance and be glad,
young men and old as well.
I will turn their mourning into gladness;
I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.
I will satisfy the priests with abundance,
and my people will be filled with my bounty,’
declares the Lord.
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

Praise The Lord, Jerusalem.
1. O praise the Lord, Jerusalem!
Zion, praise your God!
He has strengthened the bars of your gates,

Praise The Lord, Jerusalem.
2. He has established peace on your borders,

He sends out his word to the earth

Praise The Lord, Jerusalem.
3. He makes his word known to Jacob,
to Israel his laws and decrees.
He has not dealt thus with other nations;
he has not taught them his decrees.
Praise The Lord, Jerusalem.
A reading from the Gospel according to John.
John 1:10-18
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, ‘This is the one I spoke about when I said, “He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.”’) Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in the closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

In this Sunday’s Gospel we find one of a number of passages in the Bible which form the basis of a core belief of the Christian faith, namely Jesus was more than a great teacher. He was God born as a human being.
Jesus was not God who had taken the semblance of a human being like the gods of Greek and Roman mythology. He was not God because he, like the Roman emperors, had declared himself God.
Jesus was not a human being whom God had imbued with god-like abilities and powers. Nor was Jesus an enlightened sage who under the tutelage of ascended masters acquired such abilities and power on his own.
Jesus was God who became a human being. Theologians call this belief the doctrine of the Incarnation.
The same passage provides one explanation of why God would do such a thing. It is not the only reason we find in the Bible, but it is one to which John draws our attention in this passage. John puts it this way: “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in the closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.”
Later on in John’s Gospel, in John 14: 8-11, Jesus points to Philip’ attention that anyone who has seen him has seen the Father. What he says he does not say on his own. The Father who lives in him say it.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

What Jesus is saying is not that he is the voice of God, a concept that was not unknown in the ancient world. God is not speaking through him as God might through a prophet. Rather, he and the Father have such a close relationship that when he speaks, his words are the Father’s.
Like John 1:10-18, this passage is testimony to Jesus’ divinity.
It may be tempting to conclude from these passages that Jesus’ reason for becoming a human being was solely to become a visible revelation of God. To do so, however, would be to ignore the other reasons for Jesus’ incarnation to which the Bible testifies. To properly understand why God became flesh we must take into consideration all relevant passages of the Bible, not just to those which lend support to a particular belief to which we subscribe.
The danger is that we may end up following a Jesus who is a Jesus of our own creation—a Jesus whom we have shaped to our liking, and not the Jesus to whom the Bible testifies.

Let us not to forget that it is to those who believe in “the one and only Son” that God gives life and that abundantly, and not to those who bow to an idol of their own making.

and the life everlasting. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF PRAYER
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
[Let us join together in the prayer which Jesus gave us.].
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Be exalted, Lord, above the heavens,
let your glory cover the earth.
Keep our nation under your care,
and guide us in justice and truth.
Let your way be known on earth,
your saving power among all nations.
Send out your light and your truth
that we may tell of your saving works.
Have mercy upon the poor and the oppressed.
Hear the cry of those in need.
Hear our prayers, O Lord,
for we put our trust in you.
Almighty God,
you have filled us with the light of your Word,
who became flesh and lived among us;
let the light of faith shine in all that we do;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Let us pray for all people and for the Church throughout the world.
Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ has promised that you
will hear us when we ask in faith: receive the prayers we offer.
We pray for the peace of the world and the welfare of your holy Church.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
We pray for our Bishop N, and for all the clergy and people.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
We pray for [Charles our King][…… our President], for the leaders of the nations, and for all in authority.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
[We pray for seasonable weather, and for an abundance
of the fruits of the earth.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.]
[We pray that we may share with justice the resources of
the earth, and live in trust and goodwill with one
another.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.]
We pray for the aged and the infirm, for widows and
orphans, and for the sick and suffering.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
We pray for the poor and oppressed, for prisoners and captives, and for all who care for them.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
We pray for ourselves and for each other.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.
We praise you, Lord God, for the communion of saints, and
for the glorious hope of the resurrection to eternal life.
Faithful God,
you have promised to hear the prayer
of all who ask in Jesus’ name.
In your mercy, accept our prayer.
give us what we have asked in faith,
according to your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I am not mine, I am yours God
Put me to your will alone
Whether used or laid aside Lord

Pre-Chorus
I give myself to you
To your pleasure and your use
Verse 2
I am not mine, I am yours God
Put me to your will alone
Whether used or laid aside Lord
In joy or suffering Your grace be known
Lifted high or made low for you
Emptied out or filled to overflow
Let have me all things, let me have nothing
Put me to Your will and Yours alone
Pre-Chorus
I give myself to you
To your pleasure and your use
I give myself to you
To your pleasure and your use
Chorus
Glorious God, Father, Son and Spirit
You are mine, And I am yours, so be it
let this covenant I make
Be bound in heaven in your grace
Glorious God, Father, Son and Spirit
You are mine, And I am yours, so be it
Let this covenant I make
Be bound in heaven in your grace
Glorious God, Father, Son and Spirit
You are mine, And I am yours, so be it
Let this covenant I make
Be bound in heaven in your grace
Glorious God, Father, Son and Spirit
You are mine, And I am yours, so be it
Let this covenant I make
Be bound in heaven in your grace
