Thursday Evenings at All Hallows (Thursday, May 18, 2023)

Welcome to Thursday Evenings at All Hallows. This Thursday is the Feast of the Ascension, or Ascension Day, a day on which a number of Christian traditions celebrate Jesus’ bodily ascension into heaven forty days after he rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. In some traditions the feast is celebrated on this coming Sunday, the Sunday after Ascension.

1 All hail the King of Heaven, Christ the Lord of all,
Whom thundering angels circle ‘round ablaze with awe;
Let now the Hallelujah, of earth in glad refrain,
Ascend the throne, to him belongs immortal praise.

All hail the King of Heaven,
Creation join together,
Let endless praises crown his name
All hail the King of Heaven.

2 All hail the Great Redeemer, who so humbly came
The lamb of our salvation, O for sinners slain
Let now the loud Hosanna resound from shore to shore
You nations say, “His kingdom reigns, forevermore!”

All hail the King of Heaven,
Creation join together,
Let endless praises crown his name
All hail the King of Heaven.

3 Let praise of nations rise now as a symphony
To sound the endless wonders of his majesty
Let every heart adore him, the great and small the same
Through generations ever let his anthem ring!

All hail the King of Heaven,
Creation join together,
Let endless praises crown his name
All hail the King of Heaven.

1 You are holy, you are Lord,
and your works are wonderful,
great and strong Most High almighty.

2 You are Father, you are king,
good and wise, true and living.
You are peace and rest abiding.

You are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
You are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
You are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
Wonderful Lord.

3 You are beauty, you are friend,
our protector, you defend.
You are hope and faith, our Savior.

You are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
You are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
You are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
Oh wonderful Lord
Oh you are wonderful Lord

4 You are mercy, you are love,
all we need, more than enough,
for in you is life everlasting.

Oh you are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
You are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
Oh you are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
Oh wonderful, Lord.

You are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
You are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
You are great and wonderful, Lord.
(You are great and wonderful.)
Wonderful Lord,
wonderful Lord
so so wonderful.

The Lord be with you.
The Lord bless you.

Let us pray.

The heavens are open wide
since Jesus our brother, our Redeemer,
has entered through the veil.
We thank you for his new and living way,
by which we join the unnumbered millions
who are with you forever.
Praise to you our God; you answer prayer.
Amen.

HEARING GOD’S WORD

A reading from the New Testament (Revelation 5)

I saw a scroll in the right hand of the one who sits on the throne; it was covered with writing on both sides and was sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel, who announced in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But there was no one in heaven or on earth or in the world below who could open the scroll and look inside it. I cried bitterly because no one could be found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside it. Then one of the elders said to me, “Don't cry. Look! The Lion from Judah's tribe, the great descendant of David, has won the victory, and he can break the seven seals and open the scroll.”

Then I saw a Lamb standing in the center of the throne, surrounded by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb appeared to have been killed. It had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God that have been sent through the whole earth. The Lamb went and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who sits on the throne. As he did so, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each had a harp and gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God's people. They sang a new song:

“You are worthy to take the scroll
and to break open its seals.
For you were killed, and by your sacrificial death you bought for God
people from every tribe, language, nation, and race.
You have made them a kingdom of priests to serve our God,
and they shall rule on earth.”

Again I looked, and I heard angels, thousands and millions of them! They stood around the throne, the four living creatures, and the elders, and sang in a loud voice:

“The Lamb who was killed is worthy
to receive power, wealth, wisdom, and strength,
honor, glory, and praise!”

And I heard every creature in heaven, on earth, in the world below, and in the sea—all living beings in the universe—and they were singing:

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb,
be praise and honor, glory and might,
forever and ever!”

The four living creatures answered, “Amen!” And the elders fell down and worshiped.

Silence

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

A Vision of Heaven, a Model for Christian Worship and Living

This evening’s reading describes a vision that John in exile on the island of Patmos, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea received. It is one of a series of visons which he received and which he recorded. The record of these visions forms the Book of Revelation, which is the last book of the New Testament and the last sacred text of the Christian Bible.

In his narrative John uses figurative, highly symbolic language. For this reason, it is best to focus on what is happening in the narrative, the action, to get the gist of what John wrote.

Heaven and earth, the angel hosts and all living creatures. are paying homage to God, “the one who sits on the throne,” and to the risen, ascended Jesus, “the Lamb,” the Lion of Judah, “the great descendant of David” who has “won the victory.” The paeans of praise they offer explains why the resurrected, ascended Jesus is worthy of their deepest respect and praise. They also tell us why he is deserving of our homage too.

This knowledge calls for the same response from us as exhibited by all creation in John’s vision.

How then do we pay homage to Jesus? How do we express our greatest respect and honor of Jesus? Keep in mind that when we pay homage to Jesus, we are also paying homage to God. Those who respect and honor the Son, respect and honor the Father who sent him, a point Jesus himself frequently made.

One way that we pay homage to Jesus is to gather with our fellow believers and sing the praises of God and of Jesus, of him who sits on the throne and of the Lamb who was slain. We can recount what Jesus did and what he taught. We can pray in his name for the Church and the world. We can celebrate the Lord’s Supper, not only commemorating his suffering and death but also recalling our union with him and his presence with us.

A second way we pay homage to Jesus is to choose hymns and worship songs which have God or Jesus as their primary focus and not ourselves. What is noteworthy about the songs in this evening’s reading and elsewhere in Revelation is that they are addressed to God or to Jesus and they draw our attention to God and Jesus’s attributes and deeds, those qualities and actions which make him who sits on the throne and the Lamb worthy of our deepest respect and praise.

The songs in Revelation make no mention of the subjective experience of the singer or the singer’s feelings, two characteristics that are typical of much contemporary Christian and praise and worship music. The latter is more about my experience, my feelings than it is about God or Jesus. It can be described as ME and God and ME and Jesus music with an emphasis on the ME. It reflects the preoccupation of contemporary Western culture with self.

The late Michael Perry wrote the worship song, “Glory, Glory, Glory to the Lord,” based upon this evening’s reading. It is sung to the tune HOLY, HOLY, HOLY IS THE LORD, whose composer is unknown. The focus of the song as well as content is strongly influenced by the songs in Revelation.

1 Glory, glory, glory to the Lord;
glory to the Lord God almighty:
for you created all that is.
Glory, glory glory to the Lord!

2 Honour, honour, honour to the Lamb;
honour to the Lord God almighty:
for by your blood you ransomed us.
Honour, honour, honour to the Lamb!

3 Power, power, power to the Lord;
power to the Lord God almighty:
for you have made us kings and priests.
Power, power, power to the Lord!

The Book of Revelation also inspired Carl P. Daw Jr.’s hymn, “We Marvel at Your Mighty Deeds.”

We marvel at your mighty deeds,
Lord God of time and space;
we praise your truth and righteousness,
great King of boundless grace:
for through each wonder and decree
your steadfast love we trace.

Who shall not pay you homage, Lord,
and bless your sacred Name?
Because your just and holy works
your sovereign power proclaim,
all nations will at last draw near
and you alone acclaim.

This hymn was written for MORNING SONG, an American folk hymn tune attributed to Elkanah Kelsey Dare, an early Methodist minister. It also may be sung to Herbert Howells’ SANCTA CIVITAS.

It is also important to choose hymns and worship songs that the whole congregation can sing. This enables everyone who is present at a church service to pay homage to God and to Jesus.

The Book of Revelation not only provides a model for the hymns and worship songs that we use in our church services but also a model for the services themselves. Its description of how God and Jesus are worshiped in heaven becomes our guide to how we should worship the One who sits on the throne and the Lamb on earth.

A third way we pay homage to Jesus is to live our lives in accordance with his teaching and example. We can treat others with the same kind of compassion, kindness, and forgiveness that Jesus himself showed. We can serve Jesus in others, particularly the poor and those less fortunate than ourselves.

When we pay homage to Jesus in these ways, we show that we are truly “followers of the Lamb,” disciples of Jesus, and Jesus is indeed the Lord of our lives. We also show to those who do not yet believe that Jesus is worthy of their homage too. He can make a difference in their lives and enable them to become a better person.

Here is a question to ask yourself every morning at the beginning of your day. What am I going to do this day to show particular honor to Jesus?

Take a few minutes to think about it. Then ask God to give you the grace you need to do what you have set your mind on doing.

It can be something simple such as showing kindness to others. Even little acts of kindness make a difference in someone else’s life. They are also expressions of the love Jesus would have his disciples show to others. They are expressions of our love for Jesus too, of the deep respect in which we hold him. As we honor Jesus in our daily lives, we ourselves are transformed into Jesus’ likeness. We become more and more like Jesus. We not only become a better person, but we also help others to become a better person too. This is God’s way of transforming the world.

Hymn of Response:
Open this link in a new tab to hear Tim Chester, Liv Chapman, Philip Percival, James McDonald, and Alanna Glover’s “Apostles Creed.”

1 I believe in God the Father, mighty and eternal Lord
He alone is the creator, forming all things by his word
I believe in our Lord Jesus, God’s own Son who came to earth
Born a man, by the Spirit, by a virgin given birth

Sing praise to the Father, to the Spirit and the Son
Sing praise to our holy God, forever three in one

2 I believe that Jesus suffered, on the cross he bore my shame
I believe that he was buried, then triumphant rose again
Glorified, he has ascended, seated at the Father’s side
He will come again in judgement, justice will be satisfied

Sing praise to the Father, to the Spirit and the Son
Sing praise to our holy God, forever three in one

3 I believe the Holy Spirit comes to us from Christ above
I believe the church is holy, one communion in God's love
I believe I am forgiven through the sacrifice of Christ
I believe in resurrection and in everlasting life

Sing praise to the Father, to the Spirit and the Son
Sing praise to our holy God, forever three in one

PRAYING FOR GOD’S WORLD

Concerns and Prayers:
Any person may offer a brief prayer of intercession, petition, or thanksgiving after each bidding.

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: God of mercy and all may respond: Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for all people and the Church throughout the world.

Let us pray for the preservation of the earth…

Let us pray for peace and shared prosperity…

Let us pray for our nation…

Let us pray for the Church and its mission…

Let u pray for ourselves and our community…

Let us pray for those in need…

Let us give thanks for the faithfully departed…

Other biddings may be added.

Eternal God and Father,
you have promised to hear those who pray
in the name of your Son.
Grant that what we have asked in faith
we may obtain according your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

As our Saviour taught his disciples, we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

GOING OUT TO SERVE

Let us pray.

Lord our God, we give you thanks
because you have delivered us from the
power of darkness
and brought us into the kingdom of
your Son.
Grant that, as by his resurrection
we are brought to new life,
so by his continued reign in us
we may be brought to eternal joy;
through the same Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Closing Song:
Open this link in a new tab to hear George A. Young’s “God Leads His Dear Children Along.”

1 In shady, green pastures, so rich and so sweet,
God leads his dear children along;
where the water’s cool flow bathes the weary one’s feet,
God leads his dear children along.

Some through the waters, some through the flood,
some through the fire, but all through the blood;
some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,
in the night season and all the day long.

2 Sometimes on the mount where the sun shines so bright,
God leads his dear children along;
sometimes in the valley, in darkest of night,
God leads his dear children along.

Some through the waters, some through the flood,
some through the fire, but all through the blood;
some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,
in the night season and all the day long.

3 Though sorrows befall us and evils oppose,
God leads his dear children along;
through grace we can conquer, defeat all our foes,
God leads his dear children along.

Some through the waters, some through the flood,
some through the fire, but all through the blood;
some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,
in the night season and all the day long.

4 Away from the mire, and away from the clay,
God leads His dear children along;
Away up in glory, eternity’s day,
God leads His dear children along.

Some through the waters, some through the flood,
some through the fire, but all through the blood;
some through great sorrow, but God gives a song,
in the night season and all the day long.

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

May we grow in the grace and knowledge
of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ;
to whom be glory both now and for ever.
Alleluia, Amen.
