Sundays at All Hallows (Sunday, May 21, 2023)

Welcome to Sundays at All Hallows. This Sunday is the seventh Sunday of Eastertide, also known as the sixth Sunday after Easter Sunday and the Sunday after Ascension. The Easter Season is drawing to a close, but our celebration of Jesus’ resurrection will continue throughout the year. Every Sunday is a feast of the resurrection on which Christians celebrate their Lord’s victory over death and the promise of new life in him.

DRAWING NEAR TO GOD

Alleluia! Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

1 Hallelujah! Sing praise to your Creator,
sun, moon, and stars
and angels above.
Praise the Lord, whose word
established the heavens,
who upholds all the earth
in power and love.
God reign on high,
let the heavens rejoice!
(Oh) God reigns on high,
let the heavens rejoice!

2 Praise the Lord,
all mountains and oceans,
rolling thunder and wind
and storm clouds on high.
Praise the Lord, your Maker,
all living creatures,
all the beasts in the field
and birds in the sky.
Both young and old,
come and join in the song!
(Oh) both young and old,
Come and join in the song!

3 Give to God all glory and honor.
From the depths to heights
let praises resound
to the Lord, the source of
strength and salvation
for all people on whom
God’s favor is found.
Praise God, you saints
who are claimed as God’s own!
(Oh) praise God, you saints
who are claimed as God’s own!

Songs of Praise:

1 It’s a song of praise to the Maker,
the thrush sings high in the tree.
It’s a song of praise to the Maker,
the gray whale sings in the sea,

And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing
to the Maker too.

2 It’s a call of life to the Giver,
when waves and waterfalls roar.
It’s a call of life to the Giver
when high tides break on the shore,

And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing
to the Maker too.

3 It’s a hymn of love to the Lover;
the bumblebees hum along.
It’s a hymn of love to the Lover;
the summer breeze joins the song,

And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing
to the Maker too.

4 It’s the chorus of all creation;
it’s sung by all living things.
It’s the chorus of all creation;
a song the universe sings,

And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing
to the Maker too.
And sing, sing, sing
to the Maker too.

1 God created heaven and earth,
all things perfect brought to birth;
God’s great power made dark and light,
earth revolving day and night.

2 Let us praise God's mercy great;
for the Lord in hope we wait;
God, who fashions all that lives,
to each one a blessing gives.

3 God's rich grace beyond compare
saves us all from death's despair.
All earth's creatures, small and great,
praise God for that blessed state!

The Lord be with you.
The Lord bless you.

Let us pray.

Silence

Almighty God,
you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ
with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven.
Mercifully give us faith to know
that, as he promised,
he abides with us on earth to the end of time;
who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

HEARING GOD’S WORD

Lord, open our hearts and minds
by the power of your Holy Spirit,
that, as the Scriptures are read
and your Word proclaimed,
we may hear with joy what you say to us today.
Amen.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1: 6-14)

So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”

He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but some day he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”

Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of a kilometre. When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying.

Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the zealot), and Judas (son of James). They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

1 Sing a joyful song unto our God
All earth, be glad and sing
Sing out of all God’s gracious ways
Of all the blessings shown
We will raise our voices, sing our praise
Give thanks with grateful hearts
For our loving God has heard our prayers
And answered when we called

2 You have turned the sea into dry land
And led us from fire and storm
You have kept our feet from stumbling
Led us to a spacious place
May the sound of thanks ring strong and clear
For God has come to help
I will bring to God my offering
My heart, my life, my soul

3 O Come and hear, and I will tell
What God has done for me
I cried aloud when I was lost
You came to comfort me
You heard my prayer and listened well
When I was all alone
Blessed be our God who hears us now,
Whose love will never cease

Sing a joyful song unto our God
All earth be glad and sing

Silence

A reading from the First Letter of Peter (1 Peter 4:12–14; 5:6–11)

Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.

If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you.

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honour. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.

In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation. All power to him for ever! Amen.

Silence

This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Speak O Lord, your servant is listening.
You have the words of eternal life.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

A reading from the Gospel according to John (John 17: 1-11)

Alleluia! Hear the Gospel of Christ.
Glory to Christ our Saviour. Alleluia!

After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. For you have given him authority over everyone. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him. And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.

“I have revealed you to the ones you gave me from this world. They were always yours. You gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything I have is a gift from you, for I have passed on to them the message you gave me. They accepted it and know that I came from you, and they believe you sent me.

“My prayer is not for the world, but for those you have given me, because they belong to you. All who are mine belong to you, and you have given them to me, so they bring me glory. Now I am departing from the world; they are staying in this world, but I am coming to you. Holy Father, you have given me your name; now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are.

Silence

Alleluia! This is the Gospel of Christ.
Praise to Christ our Lord. Alleluia!

Our Generous God

“The hum of bees is the voice of the garden” is a quote from the late Elizabeth Lawrence who is best known for her columns and books on Southern gardening. It often appears on memes on social media, urging people to make their gardens and yards friendlier to bees.

I have visited a number of flower gardens in my lifetime. Among my memories of them are the hum of the bees and the sight of the bees themselves flying from blossom to blossom. Their hum is a pleasant sound. Indeed, I would heartily agree with Elizabeth Lawrence. It is indeed the voice of the garden.

The words in today’s reading remind me of bees in a garden. They are buzzing around the garden, and we may not at first see their purpose, but like the bees in a garden, they do have a purpose. As the bees gather nectar from the flowers, they also pollinate them. Let us take a look at each reading appointed for today and then consider what they are saying and how it applies to us.

In today’s first reading from Luke’s Acts of the Apostles Jesus tells his disciples that they will receive power when Holy Spirit comes upon them. And they will be his witnesses, telling people about him everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. After saying this, Jesus is taken up in a cloud. The disciples are instructed to return to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem they gather in the upstairs room of the house where they were staying and spend their time in prayer. Jesus’ mother, Mary, several other women, and Jesus’ brothers join them.

In today’s second reading Peter offers encouragement to the readers of his first letter. He assures them that if they humble themselves, God will lift them up in his own good time. They can leave their worries and cares with God as God cares for them. Peter urges them to be firm in their faith and to resist the devil. Other believers are experiencing the same kind of suffering as they are. They are not alone in their suffering. God who has kindly called them to share in his eternal glory in union with Christ will perfect them and give them “firmness, strength and a sure foundation.”

From today’s third reading from John’s Gospel, we learn that God gave Jesus authority over all people, so that he might give eternal life to all those God gave him. Eternal life means to know the Father, the only true God, and to know Jesus Christ, whom God sent. We also learn that Jesus knows whom God has given to him because they have obeyed God’s word, they know that everything God gave Jesus comes from God, and they received the message that God gave Jesus. They know that it is true that Jesus came from God, and they believe that God sent him. it is for the safety of those whom God has given him that Jesus prays so that they may be one just as he and God are one.

Simply put, the first reading is saying that God is a God who empowers us; the second reading, God is a God who perfects us; and the third reading, God is a God who God gifts us. All three readings point to the essential character of God, to God’s goodness, to God’s merciful kindness, to God’s grace, to God’s goodwill and favor toward us, unearned and undeserved.

The way God empowers us is with his own presence, the Holy Spirit, living in us. God empowers all who believe irrespective of our gender, our race, our nationality, the color of our skin, the language we speak, or our walk in life, regardless of all the divisions into which we separate our fellow human beings. Jesus’ mother and several other women were present when the Holy Spirit fell upon those gathered in the upper room. They too were set apart to be witnesses to Jesus, to tell others about him.

How does God perfect us? God perfects us through the very same Spirit working in our lives, transforming us into the likeness of Jesus. The Holy Spirit produces in us the qualities that formed Jesus’ own character, and Jesus’ character reflects God’s own character.

With what does God gift us? God gifts us with an intimate relationship with himself and with Jesus. It is this relationship that is eternal life. Knowing God and Jesus is more than knowing about God and Jesus. It means “coming alive to God through Jesus Christ and surrendering ourselves to him in grateful love.” We recognize and turn from our sins, and we trust in Jesus and his atoning death on the cross to forgive our sins, enabled by grace, the power of the Holy Spirit working in us. It is not a static relationship. Just as we come to know a friend, a partner, or a spouse more deeply over time, we come to know God and Jesus more deeply. God also gifts us with the new birth and with the Holy Spirit. We become a new person.

All this happens because God is a generous God, a loving and merciful God, patient, kind, and ready to forgive.

Song of Response:

All this pain
I wonder if I’ll ever find my way
I wonder if my life could really change at all
All this earth
Could all that is lost ever be found
Could a garden come up from this ground at all

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

All around
Hope is springing up from this old ground
Out of chaos life is being found in You

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

[Instrumental interlude]

You make me new, You are making me new
You make me new, You are making me new

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of us

You make me new, You are making me new
You make me new, You are making me new

PRAYING FOR GOD’S WORLD

Concerns and Prayers:
Any person may offer a brief prayer of intercession, petition, or thanksgiving after each bidding.

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: God of mercy and all may respond: Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for all people and the Church throughout the world.

Let us pray for the preservation of the earth…

Let us pray for peace and shared prosperity…

Let us pray for our nation…

Let us pray for the Church and its mission…

Let us pray for ourselves and our community…

Let us pray for those in need…

Let us give thanks for the faithfully departed…

Other biddings may be added.

Eternal God and Father,
you have promised to hear those who pray
in the name of your Son.
Grant that what we have asked in faith
we may obtain according your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

As our Saviour taught his disciples, we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

GOING OUT TO SERVE

Let us pray.

Lord our God, we give you thanks
because you have delivered us from the
power of darkness
and brought us into the kingdom of
your Son.
Grant that, as by his resurrection
we are brought to new life,
so by his continued reign in us
we may be brought to eternal joy;
through the same Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Closing Song:

1 Lord of creation, to you be all praise!
Most mighty your working, most wondrous your ways!
Your glory and might are beyond us to tell,
and yet in the heart of the humble you dwell.

2 Lord of all power, I give you my will,
in joyful obedience your tasks to fulfil.
Your bondage is freedom, your service is song;
and, held in your keeping, my weakness is strong.

3 Lord of all wisdom, I give you my mind;
rich truth that surpasses our knowledge to find,
what eye has not seen and what ear has not heard
is taught by your Spirit and shines from your word.

4 Lord of all bounty, I give you my heart;
I praise and adore you for all you impart,
your love to inspire me, your counsel to guide,
your presence to shield me, whatever betide.

*5 Lord of all being, I give you my all;
if ever I leave you, I stumble and fall;
but lead in your service your word to obey,
I’ll walk in your freedom to the end of the way.

*Omitted on the video.

May the God of hope
fill us with all joy and peace in believing
through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen
