Sundays at All Hallows (Sunday, May 14, 2023)

Welcome to Sundays at All Hallows. Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week, on a Sunday. Since earliest days of Christianity, they have observed Sundays as the Lord’s Day, celebrating his resurrection and the promise of new life for those who believe.

DRAWING NEAR TO GOD

Alleluia! Christ is risen!
He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Joy comes with the dawn;
joy comes with the morning sun,
joy springs from the tomb
and scatters the night with her song,
joy comes with the dawn.

Weeping may come;
weeping may come
in the night,
when dark shadows
cloud our sight.

Joy comes with the dawn;
joy comes with the morning sun,
joy springs from the tomb
and scatters the night with her song,
joy comes with the dawn
.

Sorrow will turn,
sorrow will turn into song,
and God’s laughter
makes us strong.

Joy comes with the dawn;
joy comes with the morning sun,
joy springs from the tomb
and scatters the night with her song,
joy comes with the dawn.

We will rejoice,
we will rejoice,
and give praise,
to the One
who brings us grace.

Joy comes with the dawn;
joy comes with the morning sun,
joy springs from the tomb
and scatters the night with her song,
joy comes with the dawn.

May the Lord forgive what we have been,
help us to amend what we are
and direct what we shall be,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Hymn of Praise:
Open this link in a new tab to hear “Glory Be to God in Heaven.”

Glory be to God in heaven,
peace on earth to humankind.
Father, heavenly King, Creator,
God of power undefined,
praise and honour, thanks we offer,
worship you with heart and mind.

Jesus Christ, our Saviour, only
Son of God by faith we know;
Lamb of God, the world’s Redeemer,
love and mercy to us show;
seated at the Father’s right hand,
intercede for us below.

You alone, O Lord, are holy,
Jesus Christ, you are Most High
with the Father and the Spirit;
Trinity, to you we cry:
‘Alleluia, alleluia!’ – you,
O God, we glorify.

The Lord be with you.
The Lord bless you.

Let us pray.

Silence

Eternal God,
light of the minds that know you,
joy of the hearts that love you,
strength of the wills that serve you;
grant us so to know you that we may truly love you,
and so to love you that we may gladly serve you,
now and always.
Amen.

HEARING GOD’S WORD

Lord, open our hearts and minds
by the power of your Holy Spirit,
that, as the Scriptures are read
and your Word proclaimed,
we may hear with joy
what you say to us today.
Amen.

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 17:22–31)

So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about.

“He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries.

“His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way towards him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone.

“God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.”

Silence

This is the word of the Lord
Thanks be to God.

Open this link to ear David G. Preston’s paraphrase of Psalm 66, “Shout with Joy to God, All Nations.”

1 Shout with joy to God, all nations,
Sing the glory of his name;
Praise with loudest acclamations!
His tremendous deeds proclaim!
All his foes in fear and trembling
Bow beneath his mighty arm,
While all earth with joy assembling
Sounds his praise in song and psalm.

2 Come and see, with awe and wonder,
See displayed the power of God!
As he held the waves asunder
Israel crossed the sea dry-shod;
Praise him, then, with jubilation,
Who for ever rules by might,
Keeping watch lest any nation
Dare contest his sovereign right.

3 Praise him, who has stood beside us
And not let our footsteps slide!
In the fires of life you tried us
Till, like silver, purified:
You sent fierce affliction to us,
Conquerors trampled on our head,
Yet through flame and flood you drew us
And to peace and freedom led.

4 What thank-offering shall I render,
My most solemn vows to pay,
Made to you, my strong defender,
When I faced the evil day?
Here I offer on your altar
All I am and have to do;
May my purpose never falter,
All my life be spent for you.

5 Come and listen, all who fear him,
Hear what God has done for me:
With my praises I drew near him,
And poured out my urgent plea;
Had I cherished sin within me,
God would not have heard my prayer;
Praise him for the answer given me:
In his gracious love and care.
Had I cherished sin within me,
God would not have heard my prayer;
Praise him for the answer given me:
In his gracious love and care.

Silence

A reading from the First Letter of Peter (1 Peter 3:13–22)

Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!

Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.

So he went and preached to the spirits in prison—those who disobeyed God long ago when God waited patiently while Noah was building his boat. Only eight people were saved from drowning in that terrible flood. And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Now Christ has gone to heaven. He is seated in the place of honour next to God, and all the angels and authorities and powers accept his authority.

Thanks be to God.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Speak O Lord, your servant is listening.
You have the words of eternal life.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

A reading from the Gospel according to John (John 14:15–21)

Alleluia! Hear the Gospel of Christ.
Glory to Christ our Saviour. Alleluia!

“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognise him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”

Silence

Alleluia! This is the Gospel of Christ.
Praise to Christ our Lord. Alleluia!

What’s Love Got to Do with It?

I remember a time when I could drive anywhere in the Southern Bible Belt, and I would see motor vehicles with a “I love Jesus” or “Hoot if you love Jesus” bumper sticker. They were on cars, vans, pick-up trucks, and eighteen wheelers. Some vehicles sported both stickers. Their popularity would fade—at least in my neck of the woods. I have not seen one in several years—maybe a couple of decades or more.

When I did see these bumper stickers, they would prompt me to ask myself whether the occupant of the vehicle sporting the bumper sticker really understood what it means to “love Jesus.”

People have different ideas about what it means to love Jesus. For some it means having warm fuzzy feelings about Jesus. For others it means thinking, speaking, and acting the way the members and attendees of their church think, speak, and act.

In today’s reading from the Gospel of John Jesus himself talks about what it means to love him. ““If you love me, obey my commandments,” he tells his disciples. “Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me.” A few verses later Jesus says, “All who love me will do what I say.” He goes on to say, “Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me.”

Jesus says noting about feeling warm and fuzzy inside when you think about him or hear someone talking about him. He says nothing about having the same attitudes and opinions as the people at your church or about behaving in the way that they do. What Jesus does is tie loving him to believing him and following his teaching. His teaching, he emphasizes, is not his own but God’s. The inference is that his disciples in obeying him are obeying God, in loving him are loving God.

We can paper our house or apartment with posters proclaiming our love for Jesus. We can wear T-shirts with "I love Jesus" emblazoned across the front and back. We can sing in praise of Jesus on Sundays and experience feelings of elation from the endorphins and oxytocin our bodies release, “get high on Jesus.” We can adopt and push the same views on social issues as everyone else at church and campaign and vote for the same politicians. But we will not be able to honestly claim that we love Jesus any more than our next door neighbor who sleeps in or plays 18 holes of golf or takes the kids to baseball or soccer practice on Sunday morning.

Loving Jesus means living our lives according to his teaching and example. In other words, it means being a true disciple of Jesus. To friends and strangers Jesus will be clearly the most influential person in our lives.

In today’s reading Jesus makes a promise to the disciples. It is a promise that he makes to all who follow him. He promises to reveal himself to those who accept his teaching and follow what he taught, not only by word but also by example. As we live Jesus’ teaching, we will experience Jesus in our attitudes, our ways of thinking, and our behavior, in our relationships with others. We will become more and more like Jesus.

None of this is possible apart from God’s grace, the power of the Holy Spirit working in our lives. The Holy Spirit enables us to believe and once we believe, the Holy Spirit becomes a part of us, uniting us to God, to Jesus, and to our fellow believers. The Holy Spirit helps us to live our lives as Jesus taught.

For those who love Jesus, he is truly the Lord of their lives.

Song of Response:
Open this link to hear Keith Getty and Stuart Townend’s “Hoy Spirit, Living Breath of God.”

1 Holy Spirit, living Breath of God,
Breathe new life into my willing soul.
Bring the presence of the risen Lord
To renew my heart and make me whole.
Cause Your Word to come alive in me;
Give me faith for what I cannot see;
Give me passion for Your purity.
Holy Spirit, breathe new life in me.

2 Holy Spirit, come abide within;
May Your joy be seen in all I do—
Love enough to cover ev’ry sin
In each thought and deed and attitude,
Kindness to the greatest and the least,
Gentleness that sows the path of peace.
Turn my striving into works of grace.
Breath of God, show Christ in all I do.

3 Holy Spirit, from creation’s birth,
Giving life to all that God has made,
Show Your power once again on earth;
Cause Your church to hunger for Your ways.
Let the fragrance of our prayers arise.
Lead us on the road of sacrifice
That in unity the face of Christ
Will be clear for all the world to see.

PRAYING FOR GOD’S WORLD

Concerns and Prayers:
Any person may offer a brief prayer of intercession, petition, or thanksgiving after each bidding.

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: God of mercy and all may respond: Hear our prayer.

Let us pray for all people and the Church throughout the world.

Let us pray for the preservation of the earth…

Let us pray for peace and shared prosperity…

Let us pray for our nation…

Let us pray for the Church and its mission…

Let us pray for ourselves and our community…

Let us pray for those in need…

Let us give thanks for the faithfully departed…

Other biddings may be added.

Eternal God and Father,
you have promised to hear those who pray
in the name of your Son.
Grant that what we have asked in faith
we may obtain according your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

As our Saviour taught his disciples, we pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

GOING OUT TO SERVE

Let us pray.

Lord our God, we give you thanks
because you have delivered us from the
power of darkness
and brought us into the kingdom of
your Son.
Grant that, as by his resurrection
we are brought to new life,
so by his continued reign in us
we may be brought to eternal joy;
through the same Christ our Lord.
Amen.

1 God be the love to search and keep me
God be the prayer to move my voice
God be the strength to now uphold me
O Christ, surround me
O Christ, surround me

2 Bind to myself the name of Holy
Great cloud of witnesses enfold
Prophets, apostles, angels witness
O Christ, surround me
O Christ, surround me

3 Brightness of sun and glow of moonlight
Flashing of lightning, strength of wind
Depth of the sea to soil of planet
O Christ, surround me
O Christ, surround me

4 Walking behind to hem my journey
Going ahead to light my way
And from beneath, above, and all ways
O Christ, surround me
O Christ, surround me

[Instrumental interlude]

5 Christ in the eyes of all who see me
Christ in the ears that hear my voice
Christ in the hearts of all who know me
O Christ, surround me
O Christ, surround me
O Christ, surround me
O Christ, surround me
