Evening Prayer
The Service of LightJesus Christ is the light of the world.
A light no darkness can extinguish.
Open this link in a new tab to hear Michael John Trotta’s choral arrangement of “O Gracious Light.”
O gracious Light,
pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven.
O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times
to be praised,
You are worthy at all times
to be praise,
You are worthy at all times,
worthy to be praised,
praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, Giver of light,
you are worthy to be glorified
through all the worlds.
O gracious Light,
O gracious Light,
pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven.
O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed!
O gracious Light, gracious Light,
pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven.
Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed!
Holy and blessed!
Holy and blessed!
Thanksgiving
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Blessed are you, Sovereign God,
our light and our salvation,
eternal creator of day and night,
to you be glory and praise for ever.
Now, as darkness is falling,
hear the prayer of your faithful people.
As we look for your coming in glory,
wash away our transgressions,
cleanse us by your refining fire
and make us temples of your Holy Spirit.
By the light of Christ,
dispel the darkness of our hearts
and make us ready to enter your kingdom,
where songs of praise for ever sound.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God for ever. Amen.

Let my prayer rise up
like incense in your presence,
the raising of my hands,
and offering to you

Suba mi oración
como incienso en tu precensia,
el alzar de mis manos
como ofrenda de la tarde.
1 I have called to you, O God,
come quickly to help me.
Hear my voice when I call to you.
Let my prayer rise up like incense before you,
and my hands like an evening off’ring.

Escucha mi voz,
cuando te invoco.
Suba mi oración
como incienso en tu precensia,
como incienso en tu precensia.

keep watch on the door of my lips.
Let me never turn my heart to evil or revenge,
nor join the evil in their feasting.

So I pray to you, O God,
I pray to you, O God, against their hateful ways.

que el bueno me reprenda,
es un gran favor, oh Señor.
Pero que el óleo de impÃo no perfume mi cabezañ
Seguiré rezando en sus desgracias.

The Psalms
Open this link to hear Jonathan Asprey’s paraphrase of Psalm 84, “How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place.”
How lovely is thy dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts, to me.
My soul is longing and fainting,
The courts of the Lord to see.
My heart and flesh, they are singing,
For joy to the living God.
How lovely is thy dwelling-place,
O Lord of hosts, to me.
Even the sparrow finds a home,
Where he can settle down.
And the swallow she can build a nest,
Where she may lay her young.
Within the court of the Lord of hosts,
My King, my Lord and my God.
And happy are those who are dwelling where
The song of praise is sung.
And I’d rather be a door-keeper
And only stay a day,
Than live the life of a sinner
And have to stay away.
For the Lord is shining as the sun,
And the Lord, he’s like a shield;
And no good thing does he withhold
From those who walk the way.
How lovely is thy dwelling place,
O Lord of hosts, to me.
My soul is longing and fainting,
The courts of the Lord to see.
My heart and flesh, they are singing,
For joy to the living God.
How lovely is thy dwelling-place,
O Lord of hosts, to me.
Silence is kept.
Lord God,
sustain us in this vale of tears
with the vision of your grace and glory,
that, strengthened by the bread of life,
we may come to your eternal dwelling place;
in the power of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

1 Love is the touch of intangible joy;
love is the force that no fear can destroy;
love is the goodness we gladly applaud:
God is where love is, for love is of God.
2 Love is the lilt in a lingering voice;
love is the hope that can make us rejoice;
love is the cure for the frightened and flawed:
God is where love is, for love is of God.
3 Love is the light in the tunnel of pain;
love is the will to be whole once again;
love is the trust of a friend on the road:
God is where love is, for love is of God.
4 Love is the Maker, and Spirit, and Son;
love is the kingdom their will has begun;
love is the pathway the saints all have trod:
God is where love is, for love is of God.
5 Love is the touch of intangible joy;
love is the force that no fear can destroy;
love is the goodness we gladly applaud:
love is where love is, for love is of God,
love is the force that no fear can destroy;
love is the goodness we gladly applaud:
love is where love is, for love is of God,
Love is where love is, for love is of God

Ephesians 6: 18-24 A Request for Prayer
Pray at all times with every kind of spiritual prayer, keeping alert and persistent as you pray for all Christ’s men and women.
And pray for me, too, that I may be able to speak freely here to make known the secret of that Gospel for which I am, so to speak, an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may speak out about it as my plain and obvious duty.
Tychicus, beloved brother and faithful minister, will tell you personally what I am doing and how I am getting on. I am sending him to you bringing this letter for that purpose, so that you will know exactly how we are and may take fresh heart:
Peace be to all Christian brothers, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
Grace be with all those who sincerely love our Lord Jesus Christ.
Silence is kept.
May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory
The Homily
In the closing passages of his letter to the church at Ephesus the apostle Paul urges the members of that church to pray for each other and their fellow Christians and to pray for him. After telling them why he asked Tychicus to deliver his letter to them, Paul concludes the letter with two benedictions—one addressed to the Ephesian Christians and the other to all believers.
In the preceding passage Paul has warned the Ephesians Christians about the spiritual dangers that they are facing and urged them to prepare to face these dangers:
“In conclusion be strong—not in yourselves but in the Lord, in the power of his boundless resource. Put on God’s complete armour so that you can successfully resist all the devil’s methods of attack. For our fight is not against any physical enemy: it is against organisations and powers that are spiritual. We are up against the unseen power that controls this dark world, and spiritual agents from the very headquarters of evil. Therefore you must wear the whole armour of God that you may be able to resist evil in its day of power, and that even when you have fought to a standstill you may still stand your ground. Take your stand then with truth as your belt, righteousness your breastplate, the Gospel of peace firmly on your feet, salvation as your helmet and in your hand the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God. Above all be sure you take faith as your shield, for it can quench every burning missile the enemy hurls at you.”
Paul is drawing to the attention of the Ephesians and ourselves that there are invisible spiritual forces working in the world and these spiritual forces mean us no good. They mean us harm. One might say that our world has had a dark web long before the internet was invented.
The situation that we face in our time is not too far different from that the church at Ephesus faced. The principal difference is that these hidden spiritual forces have more means with which they can influence us. The internet is proving to be a powerful weapon in their hands. They are exploiting internet influencers and social media to carry out their aims. They are stirring up and stoking the hatred and ill-will that we are increasingly seeing in today’s world.
These spiritual forces work to undo the good that God is doing in our lives or which God is doing through us. They encourage us to do harm to ourselves and to do harm to others. They seek to sabotage our relationship with God. While we are quite capable of exercising poor judgment and making bad decisions on our own, they will encourage us in our exercise of poor judgment and our making of bad decisions.
They may influence us directly or through other people whom they are influencing. These people may not themselves be aware that they are being used to do evil. They may have been misled into believing that what they are doing is good.
We generally react to the idea that there are unseen spiritual forces working in the world, forces intending us ill, in one of two ways—disbelief or morbid fascination. We may dismiss their existence as superstition—a carryover from a less enlightened age. Disbelief in their existence enables them to go about their business with little or no interference. Or we may develop an abnormal and unhealthy interest them. They will exploit this interest to influence us. They may lead us to believe that we can traffic with them for our own benefit such as gaining influence over someone else. They are using this belief to gain further influence over us and to do harm to us and harm to other people through us.
They are astute students of human weaknesses and use our weaknesses to set traps for us. A short temper, feelings of inadequacy, a rebellious streak, excessive sexual desire, an inability to share and understand the feelings of others, dishonesty, a selfish desire for wealth or possessions, jealousy, a tendency to be mean, bitterness, a desire to hurt, irritate, or offend someone, resentment, an inclination to be suspicious of other people’s motives, fearfulness, and a host of other weaknesses—they will use to keep us from doing good, to cause us to do harm to other people or ourselves, and to prevent us from maintaining a close personal relationship with God.
A common human weakness that they exploit to the fullest is our willfulness—our stubborn determination to do what we want regardless of the consequences or effects upon other people or ourselves. They are not only skilled at exploiting our natural inclination to be self-willed, but they also well-practiced at twisting to their purposes our good intentions.
Among their strategies is to separate us from what may be the influences for good in our lives and bring us more and more under their own influence. They will encourage us to do the wrong thing. They will egg us on. If they succeed in persuading us to do the wrong thing, they will seek to entangle us so deeply in wrong-doing that we will find it difficult to extricate ourselves. They will endeavor to convince us that we are beyond God’s forgiveness, that we are without hope.
They do not overlook any chance to create divisions in the church and the world and to turn Christians and other human beings against each other. They delight in watching us fight amongst ourselves. They will take full advantage of our willingness to see each other in a negative light, to harbor animosity toward each other, and to act on our bitter feelings.
What then do we pray for each other in our own church or fellowship and for our brothers and sisters in Christ in other churches and fellowships? We pray what Jesus taught us, for our fellow Christians and ourselves, “Keep us clear of temptation and save us from evil.” We ask God for grace for our fellow Christians and ourselves, for God’s holy influence in their lives and in our own.

Why We Need to Pray for Our Fellow Christians and Ourselves

We pray that God will expose the harmful influences working in the lives of our fellow Christians and in our own lives for what they are, influences that mean our brothers and sisters in Christ and ourselves no good, which are intent on using our fellow Christians and ourselves for ill and blocking their relationship and our own relationship with God.
We pray for discernment for our fellow Christians and ourselves in recognizing these influences and for wisdom in dealing with them, wisdom to do good, not harm, wisdom to be instruments of God’s grace to those who have become entangled in the web of deceit that these influences spin.
We ask God to strengthen the faith of our fellow Christians and our own faith, their trust and our own trust in God’s goodwill and merciful kindness toward his children. We ask God to enable our brothers and sisters in Christ and ourselves to do good, to do no harm, and to grow in love of God and love of other people.
