Evening Prayer 

The Service of Light

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
A light no darkness can extinguish.

Joyous light of glory of the immortal Father,
Heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ,

O Son of God, O Giver of life,
The universe proclaims your glory.

Thanksgiving

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We praise you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe!
Your word brings on the dusk of evening,
your wisdom creates both night and day.
You determine the cycles of time,
arrange the succession of the seasons,
and establish the stars in their heavenly courses.
Lord of the starry hosts is your name.
Living and eternal God,
rule over us always.

“What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ He answered, ‘I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, ‘I go, sir’; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.

Homily

The Obedient Son 

After openly defying his father, the first son has a change of heart. He goes to work in the vineyard. How many of us early in our life said “no” to God but later on said “yes”? We came to the realization that in the early part of our life we had been doing the wrong thing, turned to God, asked his forgiveness and received it, and started a new life.

When we said “no” to God, he did not say “no” to us. He worked in our hearts, drawing us to himself. We turned to God because he never left us. He was there for us.

How many of us are like the second son, like the Pharisees and the scribes in today’s reading? We said “yes” to God early in our lives. We made a declaration of faith in Jesus in baptism. Or we made a profession of faith in Jesus before the gathered church and received the prayers of the church and the laying on of hands. Yet there are many areas of our lives where we say “no” to God. We do not live our lives according to Jesus’ teaching and example. We resist God’s grace at work in us and do whatever is pleasing to ourselves. We witness others turning to God and surrendering their lives to him but are unmoved.

We are approaching the holy season of Advent, a season in which we prepare for the celebration of Jesus’ birth during the twelve days of Christmas, a season in which we also look forward to our Lord’s second coming, not as a savior but as a judge. Let us use this season wisely—to examine ourselves, to repent where we have not surrendered to God’s will, to pray for tender hearts more responsive to God’s grace, and to say “yes” to God where we have been saying “no.”
