All Hallows Evening Prayer for Wednesday Evening (October 7, 2020)

Evening Prayer

The Service of Light

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
A light no darkness can extinguish.

Open this link in a new tab to hear the ancient lamp-lighting hymn Phos hilaron, “O Gladsome Light, O Grace.”

1 O gladsome Light, O Grace
of God the Father’s face,
The eternal splendour wearing;
celestial, holy, blest,
our Saviour Jesus Christ,
joyful in Thine appearing.

2 Now, ere day fadeth quite,
we see the evening light,
our wonted hymn outpouring;
Father of might unknown,
Thee, His incarnate Son,
and Holy Ghost adoring.

3 To Thee of right belongs
all praise of holy songs,
O Son of God, Lifegiver;
Thee, therefore, O Most High,
the world doth glorify,
and shall exalt for ever.

Thanksgiving

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We praise you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe!
Your word brings on the dusk of evening,
your wisdom creates both night and day.
You determine the cycles of time,
arrange the succession of the seasons,
and establish the stars in their heavenly courses.
Lord of the starry hosts is your name.
Living and eternal God,
rule over us always.
Blessed be the Lord,
whose word makes evening fall.
Amen.

Psalm 141 is sung and incense may be burned.

Open this link in a new tab to Gavin Bryars’ choral arrangement of Psalm 141, “Lord, I Cry Unto Thee.”

Lord, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me;
give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee.

Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense;
and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth;
keep the door of my lips.

Incline not my heart to any evil thing,
to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity:
and let me not eat of their dainties.
Lord, I cry unto thee.

Let the righteous smite me;
it shall be a kindness:
and let him reprove me;
it shall be an excellent oil,
 which shall not break my head:
for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities.

When their judges are overthrown in stony places,
they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.

Our bones are scattered at the grave's mouth,
as when one cutteth and cleaveth wood upon the earth.
Lord, I cry unto thee.

But mine eyes are unto thee, O God the Lord:
in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.

Keep me from the snares which they have laid for me,
and the gins of the workers of iniquity.

Let the wicked fall into their own nets,
whilst that I withal escape.
Give heed to my voice,
let my cry come unto thee.

Silence is kept.

Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O Lord, and let your loving kindness descend upon us, that with purified minds we may sing your praises with the Church on earth and the whole heavenly host, and may glorify you forever and ever. Amen.

The Psalms

Open this link in a new tab to hear Heather Sorenson’s choral arrangement of Psalm 121, “I Lift My Eyes Unto the Hills.”

I lift my eyes unto the hills,
the hills from where my help is come.
My help, it cometh from the Lord
Who made heaven,
heaven and earth.

I lift my eyes unto the hills,
I lift my eyes unto the hills,
the hills from where my help is come,
the hills from where my help is come.
My help, it cometh from the Lord
Who made heaven,
heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved,
Neither will He sleep.
The Lord is thy keeper,
The Lord is thy shade.

The sun shall not smite thee by day;
the moon shall not smite thee by night.

The Lord shall protect thee from ev’ry evil.
He shall preserve thy soul,
The Lord shall protect thee from ev’ry evil.
He shall preserve thy soul
for-ever, for-ever,
for-ever, for-ever,
for-ever
He will preserve thy soul.

I lift my eyes unto the hills,
the hills from where my help is come.
My help, it cometh from the Lord
My help, it cometh from the Lord
My help, it cometh from the Lord
Who made heaven,
heaven and earth.
Amen, Amen.

Silence is kept.

Lord, ever watchful and faithful,
we look to you to be our defense
and we lift our hearts to know your help;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Proclamation of the Word

The Reading

A reading from the Revelation to John.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

“See, the home of God is among mortals.
He will dwell with them;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
he will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.”

And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Then he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. Those who conquer will inherit these things, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, the murderers, the fornicators, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Silence is kept.

Homily

No Place for Liars

“But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, the murderers, the fornicators, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

These words should make us shake with fear.

We live in an age which sits lightly to the truth. Even those who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ are not unaffected. We believe not only the lies that others tell us but embellish them with lies of our own and pass these falsehoods onto others. We bear false witness against others when God has commanded us not to do so. We pay no heed to the prophets’ warning that God hates lying lips. Lies and half-truths tumble from our lips like unclean water gushes from a polluted spring.

Yes, we should shake with fear. There will be no place in the new heaven and the new earth for liars. Their place will be in the lake of fire. They will suffer the fate of the devil and those who serve him.

Everyone has an opinion, you say, and I am entitled to mine. Truth is relative. There are as many truths as there are opinions.

This is what the world may now teach but it is not what the Scriptures teach. The devil is the father of lies. Liars are his children. This is Jesus’ own teaching. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth. Jesus himself is the way, the truth, and the life. These also are his teachings.

In Psalm 141, the penitential psalm which we heard tonight, the Psalmist prays that God will guard the door of his lips so that nothing which is evil passes between them—no curses, no unkind remarks, and no falsehoods.

The Psalmist’s prayer should be our prayer. We should pray that God will also grant us grace to bless when others would curse, to be compassionate where others would be cruel or uncaring, and to be truthful where others would lie and deceive. In this way we will show that we are truly God’s children, truly followers of the Lamb. Our words like those of the One seated on the throne should always be trustworthy and true.

Silence is kept.

The Gospel Canticle

Open this link in a new tab to hear the Magnificat from Thomas Weekles’ Short Service.

My soul doth magnify the Lord :
and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

For he hath regarded :
the lowliness of his hand-maiden.

For behold, from henceforth :
all generations shall call me blessed.

For he that is mighty hath magnified me :
and holy is his Name.

And his mercy is on them that fear him :
throughout all generations.

He hath shewed strength with his arm :
he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat :
and hath exalted the humble and meek.

He hath filled the hungry with good things :
and the rich he hath sent empty away.

He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel :
as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son :
and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be :
world without end. Amen.

In silent or spontaneous prayer all bring before God the concerns of the day.

The Collect

Lighten our darkness,
Lord, we pray,
and in your great mercy
defend us from all perils and dangers of this night,
for the love of your only Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

And now, as our Saviour has taught us,
we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Dismissal

Open this link to a new tab to hear the Shaker song, “In Wisdom’s Lovely Pleasant Ways.”

In wisdom’s lovely pleasant ways,
I’ll spend my days, I’ll spend my days,
In wisdom’s lovely pleasant ways,
I’ll spend my days, I’ll spend my days,
I’ll learn to watch, to pray and praise.
And thus I’ll learn pure wisdom’s ways.
I’ll learn to watch, to pray and praise.
And thus I’ll learn pure wisdom’s ways.

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The Lord bless us and keep us.
The Lord make his face to shine upon us
and be gracious to us.
The Lord lift up his countenance upon us
and give us peace. Amen
