The Service of Light
Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

Thanksgiving
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

and establish the stars in their heavenly courses.

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

Homily
Among the things that merit our attention in today’s reading is what Jesus tells the disciples about being his friends. Whether we are his friends depends upon our response to his commands. Becoming friends with Jesus involves obeying his teachings. This includes centering our lives on Jesus and making his teachings a part of ourselves as well as loving each other with the same kind of sacrificial love Jesus has shown toward us.
Those of us who are Jesus’ friends know what God is doing in the world and what is expected from us. Jesus has revealed this to us in his teachings. They are not just the teachings of a human teacher but they are also God’s teachings.
When we become followers of Jesus, it is Jesus who choose us and not the other way around. Theologians differ on how this comes about. What matters is that God takes the initiative. He took the initiative in giving his only begotten Son that all who believe in him may not perish but have eternal life. It is God who makes it possible for us to believe in Jesus, to become Jesus’ friends, and to go and bear fruit. We cannot do it under our own steam without help from God.
This is good news. God makes possible for us what might otherwise be impossible for us. Whenever we celebrate the Eucharist together, in person or online, with bread and wine or bread and grape juice, we are not only giving thanks to God for what he had done for us but we are also showing our gratitude for what is he is doing for us—how he is working in us to will and work for his good pleasure.
