Thursday Evening at All Hallows (February 12, 2026)

Welcome to Thursday Evenings at All Hallows.

True disciples of Jesus not only study what he taught, but they fashion and frame their lives according to his teaching and witness to him through how they live as well as their words. In this evening’s message we take a look what we can learn from a conversation Jesus had with a rich young man and afterward with Peter and the other disciples.

GATHER IN GOD’S NAME

Silence

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in
spirit and truth. John 4:24

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth
is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and
just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:8-9

Let us now confess our sins to almighty God.

Silence

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much
the devices and the desires of our own hearts.
we have offended against your holy laws,
we have left undone what we ought to have done,
and we have done what we ought not to have done.
Yet, good Lord, have mercy on us;
restore those who are penitent,
according to your promises declared
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Grant, most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober lives,
to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Merciful Lord,
grant to your faithful people pardon and peace,
that we may be cleansed from all our sins,
and serve you with a quiet mind;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Open our lips, O Lord;
And we shall declare your praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
Let us praise the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.

1 You servants of the Lord our God,
who work and pray both day and night.
In God's own house, lift up your hands,
and praise the Lord with all your might.

2 Lift up your hands in holiness,
come, bless the Lord and give Him praise.
Kneel down before the Lord our God,
and worship Him in all your ways.

[Instrumental interlude]

3 The Lord God bless you from His throne,
shine down upon you with His face.
He who created heaven and earth,
redeem you with His love and grace.
Redeem you with His love and grace.

1 How delightful is your dwelling,
O Almighty Sovereign Lord -
place of peace, where all my longings
are fulfilled, my soul restored.
Every fibre of my being
living God, calls out to you:
come revive me with your presence
and with hope my life renew!

2 This is where the tiny sparrow
near your altar finds her rest;
in a corner here the swallow
for her young prepares a nest.
So with all who find contentment
in your house, my God, my King,
may I also know your favour
and your praise for ever sing.

3 Blessed are all the pilgrim-hearted,
strengthened, so that as they go
arid land becomes a garden
where refreshing rivers flow.
On from strength to strength they journey
and at last arrive in heaven:
as we follow in their footsteps,
may your grace to us be given.

4 One day in your house is better
than a thousand spent elsewhere -
earth can offer no attraction
like the joy of serving there.
Sun to guide and shield to guard us
where your blessing is assured:
by your mercy keep us faithful
as we trust in you, O Lord!

Silence

Lord God,
sustain us in this vale of tears
with the vision of your grace and glory;
that as we journey towards your presence
we may go from strength to strength
in the power of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

A reading from the Gospel according to Matthew
Matthew 19:16-30

Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”

“Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”

“Which ones?” he inquired.

Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”

“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”

Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Peter answered him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?”

Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.

May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

Missing the Mark

In his letter to the Galatians, in Galatians 3:15-22, the apostle Paul explains why keeping the Law cannot put them right with God. The Law does not fulfill the promise that God made to Abraham. That promise is fulfilled in Jesus. All who believe in Jesus become descendants of Abraham and God’s children and heirs. Through their faith in Jesus, they are put right with God. God becomes their God.

The Law is also fulfilled in Jesus. See Matthew 5:17. He perfectly kept its requirements. Having been fulfilled, it passed away.

In his teaching Jesus emphasized the commandments that are called “moral. “Do not commit murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not accuse anyone falsely; respect your father and your mother; and love your neighbor as you love yourself.” See Matthew 19:18–19. They are called “moral” because they relate to the standards for good or bad character and behavior in which Jesus’ disciples are not only expected believe but also by which they are expected to live.

In our time we tend to use “moral” in a limited sense, relating to sexual behavior, but it has a broader application, referring to fairness, honesty, and the like. While we are not bound by the rules and regulations of the Mosaic Code as they relate to religious ritual, worship, and civil government, we are obligated to keep the “moral” commandments.

For us the Law shows us what wrongdoing is, where we “fall short” or “miss the mark.” Both terms are archery terms. When we shoot an arrow at a boss, a straw archery target, our arrow “falls short” when it does not reach the target. We “miss the mark” when our arrow goes wide of the target or hits only the edge of the target but does not strike the center of the target.

We fall short or miss the mark when we nurse feelings of dislike and hatred toward someone, entertain sexual desire for someone else’s spouse or partner and have sexual fantasies about them, represent a product falsely in order to sell it, gossip about someone and spread rumors about them, say something cruel to one of our parents, or exhibit no concern for other people’s troubles or do nothing to help them.

The Law shows us that we need a Savior, that we need Jesus.

In making a serious effort to obey the moral commandments, we express our love and trust in Jesus as we do when we seek in the same fashion to follow what else Jesus taught and exemplified. Just as an archer through constant practice and effort becomes skilled enough to hit the center of the target most of the time, we become better disciples of Jesus.

Elsewhere in his letters the apostle Paul talks about putting on the new person as one puts on a garment. By “new person” Paul means the change that we begin to experience in our character when turn away from sin and trust in Jesus. We do not wait for someone to come and clothe us. We put on the garment ourselves. Just as God enables us to turn away from sin and trust in Jesus, God will provide us with grace to live in a manner that pleases him. We, on our part, must open our hearts and minds to his grace and make use of it. The Holy Spirit may nudge us onto the right path and keep us on that path, but we must pay attention to the Holy Spirit. We must “keep in step with the Spirit” as the English theologian James Packer put it.

The point Jesus is making in Matthew 19:26 is that we are utterly dependent upon God’s grace, the power of the Holy Spirit working in us, for our salvation and sanctification. God’s grace arouses and awakens a vital faith in us, the kind of faith in Jesus through which are saved. It also renovates us, enabling us to grow in our love of God and holiness of life and become more like Jesus. While his disciples do not immediately grasp what he is saying, with these words, Jesus is offering reassurance both to them and ourselves. “…with God all things are possible.” Trust in the Lord!

Silence

1 My soul proclaims God’s greatness,
rejoicing in the Lord
who looks upon my meekness,
as ages will behold.
Now God does great things for me,
and holy is God’s name.
My spirit sings God’s wonders,
and oh! my soul proclaims!

2 In every generation
God pours such mercy down,
shows might before the nations,
and scatters all the proud.
God lifts up all the humble,
casts princes down in shame.
My spirit sings God’s wonders,
and oh! my soul proclaims!

3 Rejoice now in God’s promise
to Sarah and Abraham
and all of their descendants,
to keep us in God’s hand.
God fills the poor and hungry
and sends the rich away.
My spirit sings God’s wonders,
and oh! my soul proclaims!

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father
almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF PRAYER

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord, show us your mercy,
and grant us your salvation.
Keep our nation under your care,
and guide us in justice and truth.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness,
and make your chosen people joyful.
Lord, save your people,
and bless your inheritance.
Give peace in our time, O Lord,
for you are our help and strength.
Create in us dean hearts, O God,
and renew us by your Holy Spirit.

Heavenly Father, keep your household the Church continually in
your true religion; that those who lean only on the hope of your
heavenly grace may always be defended by your mighty power;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal God, from whom all holy desires, all good purposes,
and all just works proceed: give to your servants that peace
which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to
obey your commandments, and that free from the fear of our
enemies we may pass our time in trust and quietness;
through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Lighten our darkness, Lord, we pray: and in your great
mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

1 Jesus draw me ever nearer
As I labour through the storm
You have called me to this passage
And I'll follow, though I'm worn

May this journey bring a blessing
May I rise on wings of faith
And at the end of my heart's testing
With Your likeness let me wake

2 Jesus guide me through the tempest
Keep my spirit staid and sure
When the midnight meets the morning
Let me love You even more

May this journey bring a blessing
May I rise on wings of faith
And at the end of my heart's testing
With Your likeness let me wake

3 Let the treasures of the trial
Form within me as I go
And at the end of this long passage
Let me leave them at Your throne

May this journey bring a blessing
May I rise on wings of faith
And at the end of my heart's testing
With Your likeness let me wake

Silence may be kept.

Those present may offer their own prayers and thanksgivings, either silently or aloud.

Gracious God,
you have given us much today;
grant us also a thankful spirit.
Into your hands we commend ourselves
and those we love.
Be with us still, and when we take our rest
renew us for the service of your Son Jesus Christ.
Amen.

In darkness and in light,
in trouble and in joy,
help us, heavenly Father,
to trust your love,
to serve your purpose,
and to praise your name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
