Thursday Evenings at All Hallows (November 13, 2025)

Welcome to Thursday Evenings at All Hallows.

Jesus summarized in two commandments all the laws and commands in the Bible. One deals with our relationship with God; the other, with our relationship with other people. He called these commandments the greatest commandments. As we shall see, they lie at the heart of his teaching.

The topic of this evening’s message is the first greatest commandment, the commandment to love God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength.

Silence

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in
spirit and truth. John 4:24

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth
is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and
just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:8-9

Let us now confess our sins to almighty God.

Silence

Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much
the devices and the desires of our own hearts.
we have offended against your holy laws,
we have left undone what we ought to have done,
and we have done what we ought not to have done.
Yet, good Lord, have mercy on us;
restore those who are penitent,
according to your promises declared
in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Grant, most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober lives,
to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent,
have mercy on us,
pardon and deliver us from all our sins,
confirm and strengthen us in all goodness,
and keep us in life eternal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Open our lips, O Lord;
And we shall declare your praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.
Let us praise the Lord.
The Lord’s name be praised.

1 You servants of the Lord our God,
who work and pray both day and night.
In God's own house, lift up your hands,
and praise the Lord with all your might.

2 Lift up your hands in holiness,
come, bless the Lord and give Him praise.
Kneel down before the Lord our God,
and worship Him in all your ways.

[Instrumental interlude]

3 The Lord God bless you from His throne,
shine down upon you with His face.
He who created heaven and earth,
redeem you with His love and grace.
Redeem you with His love and grace.

1 The Lord is my light, my help, my salvation.
Why should I fear?
With God I fear no one.
God protects me all my life.
With the Lord what should I dread?

The Lord is my light,
the Lord is my help,
the Lord is my salvation.

2 There is one thing I ask of the Lord that I long for:
all of my days with God to be dwelling,
gazing with awe at the beauty of God,
and in wonder look on God's house.

The Lord is my light,
the Lord is my help,
the Lord is my salvation.

3 I know I will live to see the Lord’s goodness,
now, in this life I'm sure I will see it.
Trust in the Lord, be strong and be brave;
wait in hope for God, our salvation.

The Lord is my light,
the Lord is my help,
the Lord is my salvation.

Silence

O God, our defender,
give us the light of truth and wisdom
that all our hope may be fixed on you,
and on your Son, Jesus the Christ.
Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

A reading from the Gospel according to Mark.
Mark 12:28-34

A teacher of the Law was there who heard the discussion. He saw that Jesus had given the Sadducees a good answer, so he came to him with a question: “Which commandment is the most important of all?”

Jesus replied, “The most important one is this: ‘Listen, Israel! The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second most important commandment is this: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ There is no other commandment more important than these two.”

The teacher of the Law said to Jesus, “Well done, Teacher! It is true, as you say, that only the Lord is God and that there is no other god but he. And you must love God with all your heart and with all your mind and with all your strength; and you must love your neighbor as you love yourself. It is more important to obey these two commandments than to offer on the altar animals and other sacrifices to God.”

Jesus noticed how wise his answer was, and so he told him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.”

After this nobody dared to ask Jesus any more questions.

May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory.

The Most Important Commandment of All

What does it mean to love God? The people of Israel were repeatedly enjoined to love God, an instruction and an urging that we find a number of times in the Old Testament and which Jesus repeats in this evening’s reading from the Gospel of Mark and identifies as the most important commandment of all.

The specific passage of the Old Testament that Jesus repeats is Deuteronomy 6:5, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one (or The Lord our God is one Lord; or The Lord is our God, the Lord is one; or The Lord is our God, the Lord alone). Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength…,” to which he adds “with all your mind.” This addition is significant. What Jesus is saying is that we are to love God with the entirety of our being, all of ourselves.

What then does it mean to love God?

The Bible ties loving God to believing God. Those who love God take God at his word. They have faith in God and trust that God will follow through on his promises, God will do what God says he will do.

The Bible ties loving God to fearing God. By fearing God I don’t mean living in terror and dread of God but rather viewing God with reverence and awe. God commands the deepest respect of those who love God. In other words, God deserves and gets the most respect that they can show anyone or anything that is important.

To fear God, we must know God. We acquire our knowledge of God from the Bible, from God’s Word.

The reverence and awe with which we view God is reflected not only our words but also in our actions. Those who love God worship and praise God not with their lips but also with their lives.

The Bible ties loving God to desiring God, to yearning for God’s righteousness, God’s Word, and God’s merciful kindness.

The desire for God of those who love God can be compared to a very hungry person’s desire for something to eat and very thirsty person’s desire for something to drink. Only God and God alone can satisfy this hunger and quench this thirst.

The Bible ties loving God to faithfulness to God. The Bible particularly stresses the importance of faithfulness. God is not one god among many gods to those who love God. God commands their complete devotion. Nothing else takes God’s place in their hearts and in their lives.

The Bible ties loving God to trusting God’s constant love. Those who love God put their trust in God’s faithfulness, his goodwill, and his merciful kindness.

The Bible ties loving God to obeying God. Those who love God seek to do God’s will in all aspects of our lives. Jesus is their exemplar. He put God’s will first and those who love God follow his example. Like the psalmist, they delight to do God’ will.

The Bible ties loving God to serving God. Those who love God see themselves as God’s servants, fulfilling God’s purposes. They see themselves as stewards of the spiritual gifts God has given them, using them to serve those purposes. Through their words and deeds they share and show God’s love to the world.

The Bible ties loving God to loving Jesus and, in turn, ties loving Jesus to obeying his commandments, in other words, his teaching. Jesus is God’s beloved Son. Those who love God love God’s Son. They believe in Jesus and his words. Jesus taught that his teaching originated with God and those who love him follow his teaching. Their lives fashioned and framed according to what he taught are testimony to their belief in him and his words and their love for him. And to their love for God.

All of these are the ways that those who love God express their love for God, a love which is itself a gift from God who by his grace enables us to love him with the total sum of ourselves

Silence

1 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord!
Unnumbered blessings give my spirit voice;
Tender to me the promise of his word;
In God my Savior shall my heart rejoice

2 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his Name!
Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done;
His mercy sure, from age to age to same;
His holy Name--the Lord, the Mighty One

3 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might!
Powers and dominions lay their glory by
Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight
The hungry fed, the humble lifted high

4 Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word!
Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure
Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord
To children's children and for evermore!

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father
almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF PRAYER

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy on us.
Christ, have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy on us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord, show us your mercy,
and grant us your salvation.
Keep our nation under your care,
and guide us in justice and truth.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness,
and make your chosen people joyful.
Lord, save your people,
and bless your inheritance.
Give peace in our time, O Lord,
for you are our help and strength.
Create in us dean hearts, O God,
and renew us by your Holy Spirit.

Merciful Lord, grant to your faithful people pardon
and peace, that they may be cleansed from all their
sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal God, from whom all holy desires, all good purposes,
and all just works proceed: give to your servants that peace
which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to
obey your commandments, and that free from the fear of our
enemies we may pass our time in trust and quietness;
through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Lighten our darkness, Lord, we pray: and in your great
mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night;
for the love of your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

With all your heart, love the Lord, your God.
With all your soul, oh, love the Lord, your God.
With all your strength, now love the Lord, your God.
With all your mind, love the Lord,
and love your neighbor as yourself.

1 It’s not that we love God more than God loves us.
God sent his only Son, redemption from our sins.
For God abides in us and we abide in God.
We come to share this love, perfection, and desire.

With all your heart, love the Lord, your God.
With all your soul, oh, love the Lord, your God.
With all your strength, now love the Lord, your God.
With all your mind, love the Lord,
and love your neighbor as yourself.

2 Do not lose heart in doing what is good.
Do not grow weary with all the works of love.
Without these works, all your faith is dead
and only in word and deed we measure what is love.

With all your heart, love the Lord, your God.
With all your soul, oh, love the Lord, your God.
With all your strength, now love the Lord, your God.
With all your mind, love the Lord,
and love your neighbor as yourself.

3 The mercy shown to us by God who loved us first
becomes the source of hope to people in despair.
Compassion from our God calls us to become
the vessels of this love to people near and far.

With all your heart, love the Lord, your God.
With all your soul, oh, love the Lord, your God.
With all your strength, now love the Lord, your God.
With all your mind, love the Lord,
and love your neighbor as yourself.

Silence may be kept.

Those present may offer their own prayers and thanksgivings, either silently or aloud.

Gracious God,
you have given us much today;
grant us also a thankful spirit.
Into your hands we commend ourselves
and those we love.
Be with us still, and when we take our rest
renew us for the service of your Son Jesus Christ.
Amen.

In darkness and in light,
in trouble and in joy,
help us, heavenly Father,
to trust your love,
to serve your purpose,
and to praise your name,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Verse One
Eternal God, unchanging,
Mysterious and unknown;
Your boundless love, unfailing,
In grace and mercy shown.
Bright seraphim in ceaseless flight
Around Your glorious throne;
They raise their voices day
And night in praise to You alone!

Chorus
Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!
Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!

Verse Two
Lord, we are weak and frail
And are helpless in the storm;
Surround us with Your angels
And hold us in Your arms.
Our cold and ruthless enemy,
His pleasure is our harm.
Rise up, O Lord, and he will flee
Before our sovereign God.

Chorus
Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!
Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!

Verse Three
Let every creature in the sea
And every flying bird,
Let every mountain, every field,
And valley of the earth,
Let all the moons and all the stars
In all the universe
Sing praises to the living God
Who rules them by His Word.

Final Chorus
Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!
Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!
Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!
Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!
