EVENING HYMN

O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing thy praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Thou art worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
thou art worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe!
Your word brings on the dusk of evening,
your wisdom creates both night and day.
You determine the cycles of time,
arrange the succession of seasons,
and establish the stars in their heavenly courses.
Lord of the starry hosts is your name.
Living and eternal God, rule over us always.
Blessed be the Lord, whose word makes evening fall.
Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY

Open this link in a new tab to hear John S. Foley’s “One Bread, One Body, One Lord of All.”

One bread, one body, one Lord of all
One cup of blessing which we bless
And we, though many, throughout the Earth
We are one body in this one Lord

Gentile or Jew
Servant or free
Woman or man
No more

One bread, one body, one Lord of all
One cup of blessing which we bless
And we, though many, throughout the Earth
We are one body in this one Lord

Many the gifts,
many the works
One in the Lord
of all

One bread, one body, one Lord of all
One cup of blessing which we bless
And we, though many, throughout the Earth
We are one body in this one Lord

Grain for the fields
scattered and grown,
gathered to one,
for all.

One bread, one body,
one Lord of all,
one cup of blessing which we bless.
And we, though many,
throughout the earth,
we are one body in this one Lord.

SCRIPTURE

Galatians 3: 23-29 God’s Children through Faith

Before the way of faith in Christ was available to us, we were placed under guard by the law. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until the way of faith was revealed.

Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian.

For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.

Silence is kept.

May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory

HOMILY

One in Jesus Christ

When it comes to being put right with God and becoming a child of God through faith, Paul tells us in today’s reading, Galatians 3:23-29, there are no social divisions. It does not matter if we are Jew or a non-Jew. It doesn’t not matter if we are a slave or free. It does not matter what our gender is. We are all one in God’s eyes, one in Jesus Christ. Because someone is a non-Jew, a slave, and a woman, they are no less a child of God than someone who was a Jew, free, and a man.

This truth has not changed no matter what are the social divisions in a particular community in today’s world. Education does not matter. Ethnicity and race do not matter. Walk in life does not matter.

What then does this mean for us? How can we put the truth of this passage to work for others?

While God sees us as one, we, however, cling to looking at each other through the lens of social division. This proclivity is a serious obstacle to carrying out our God-given mission to the world in our generation. We may avoid sharing the gospel message with one group or another, one individual or another, because they are not our kind of people. They don’t look like us. They don’t live like us. They don’t talk like us. They don’t think like us. They don’t vote like us. They are not members of our “tribe.”

If we take time to read the writings of the apostles, it is very clear that the gospel message is not just for people like ourselves. The gospel message is for everybody. Jesus commissioned his followers to share the good news with all people groups and to make disciples from all people groups.

It is not for us to judge with whom we are to share the good news. It is too easy to let our personal opinions influence our judgment and to decide this group or that group, this individual or that individual, is beyond redemption and therefore we do not need to share the good news with them. When we make that kind of decision, we are taking upon ourselves a decision that is rightly God’s to make. We are putting ourselves in God’s place.

Jesus did not commission his followers to second-guess whom God was going to bring to a living faith in him and to concentrate our efforts solely upon these individuals. Jesus sent his disciples out to be witnesses to him and for him to the ends of the earth. The Holy Spirit is given to us for that purpose.

God promised Abraham that he would make Abraham into a great nation. God would bless Abraham and make Abraham famous, and Abraham would be a blessing to others (Genesis 12:2). We have a part to play in fulfilling that promise. By believing Jesus and keeping his word, we also show ourselves to be Abraham’s heirs and as his heirs God’s promise to Abraham belongs to us.

Silence is kept.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Open this link to hear the Liturgical Folk’s setting of our Lord’s Summary of the Law, “Jesus Creed.”

Jesus said
The first commandment is this:
Hear O Israel
The Lord our God is the only Lord.
Love the Lord your God
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
with all your mind,
and with all your strength.
The second is this:
Love your neighbor as yourself.
There is no other commandment greater than these.
Amen.

SONG OF PRAISE

Open this link in a new tab to hear the Liturgical Folk’s setting of the Magnificat, “Song of Mary.”

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed.

The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

He has mercy on those who fear him
in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly.

The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

He has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
The promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.
The Almighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his Name.

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed

THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord be with you.
The Lord bless you.

As our Saviour taught his disciples,
we pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but
deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory
for ever and ever.
Amen.

BLESSING

The blessing of God,
the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,
remain with us always. Amen.
