Evening Prayer

The Service of Light

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
A light no darkness can extinguish.

1. O gracious Light,
pure brightness of the
everliving Father in heaven.
O Jesus, Christ, holy and blessed!

2. Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing thy praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

3. Thou art worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Thanksgiving

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, Sovereign God,
our light and our salvation,
eternal creator of day and night,
to you be glory and praise for ever.
Now, as darkness is falling,
hear the prayer of your faithful people.
As we look for your coming in glory,
wash away our transgressions,
cleanse us by your refining fire
and make us temples of your Holy Spirit.
By the light of Christ,
dispel the darkness of our hearts
and make us ready to enter your kingdom,
where songs of praise for ever sound.
Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God for ever. Amen.

Psalm 141 is sung and incense may be burned.

Open this link in a new tab to hear Peter Inwood’s responsorial setting of Psalm 141, “O Lord, Let My Prayer Rise Before You Like Incense.”

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like incense,
my hands like an evening offering.

1. Lord, I am calling:
hasten to help me.
Listen to me as I cry to you.
Let my prayer rise before you like incense,
my hands like an evening offering.

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like incense,
my hands like an evening offering.

2. Lord, set a guard at my mouth,
keep watch at the gate of my lips.
Let my heart not turn to things that are wrong,
to sharing the evil deeds done by the sinful.
No, I will never taste their delights.

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like incense,
my hands like an evening offering.

3. The good may reprove me,
in kindness chastise me,
but the wicked shall never anoint my head.
Ev’ry day I counter their malice with prayer.

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like incense,
my hands like an evening offering.

4 To you, Lord, my God, my eyes are turned:
in you I take refuge;
do not forsake me.
Keep me from the traps they have set for me,
from the snares of those who do evil.

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you like incense,
my hands like an evening offering.

5 Praise to the Father, praise to the Son,
all praise to the life-giving Spirit.
As it was, is now and shall always be
for ages unending. Amen.

O Lord, let my prayer rise before you as incense,
my hands like an evening offering.

Silence is kept.

Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O Lord, and let your loving kindness descend upon us, that with purified minds we may sing your praises with the Church on earth and the whole heavenly host, and may glorify you forever and ever. Amen.

The Psalms

I lift my eyes unto the hills,
the hills from where my help is come.
My help, it cometh from the Lord
Who made heaven,
heaven and earth.

I lift my eyes unto the hills,
the hills from where my help is come.
My help, it cometh from the Lord
Who made heaven,
heaven and earth.

He will not suffer thy foot to be moved,
Neither will He sleep.
The Lord is thy keeper,
The Lord is thy shade.

The sun shall not smite thee by day;
the moon shall not smite thee by night.

The Lord shall protect thee from ev’ry evil.
He shall preserve thy soul,
The Lord shall protect thee from ev’ry evil.
He shall preserve thy soul
for-ever, for-ever,
for-ever, for-ever,
for-ever
He will preserve thy soul.

I lift my eyes unto the hills,
the hills from where my help is come.
My help, it cometh from the Lord
My help, it cometh from the Lord
My help, it cometh from the Lord
Who made heaven,
heaven and earth.
Amen, Amen.

Silence is kept.

Lord, ever watchful and faithful,
we look to you to be our defense
and we lift our hearts to know your help;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Proclamation of the Word

The Reading

2 Corinthians 13:4-13 Further Warning

For he was crucified in weakness, but lives by the power of God. For we are weak in him, but in dealing with you we will live with him by the power of God.

Examine yourselves to see whether you are living in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless, indeed, you fail to meet the test! I hope you will find out that we have not failed. But we pray to God that you may not do anything wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. For we rejoice when we are weak and you are strong. This is what we pray for, that you may become perfect. So I write these things while I am away from you, so that when I come, I may not have to be severe in using the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.

Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice. Put things in order, encourage one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the saints greet you.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the sharing in the Holy Spirit be with all of you.

Silence is kept.

May your word live in us
and bear much fruit to your glory

The Homily

Test Yourselves

Today’s reading are the final passages of Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians. In these final passages Paul urges the members of the church at Corinth to examine themselves to see whether they are living in the faith. Test themselves. “Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you?” Paul asks them.

Examining ourselves to see whether we are living in the faith is something that we ourselves also need to do on a regular basis. It is surprisingly easy to drift away from the faith while at the same time believing that we are Christians. We come to equate going to church, singing hymns, listening to Scripture readings and sermons, saying prayers, and receiving communion with the faith. However, our lives as seen by outsiders are devoid of Jesus Christ. They are not an embodiment of the one whom we call “Master, Brother, Lord, and Friend.” When others look at us, they do not see Christ. When others listen to us, they do not hear Christ.

Jesus Christ is not in us because we do not abide in him, and his words do not abide in us. As Jesus told Judas (not Iscariot), “Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. “(John 14: 23-24 NRSV)

In the nineteenth century the Rev. Edwin P. Parker, a Congregationalist minister, wrote a hymn that contains this line, “Help us to prove, as we profess, our fellowship with Thee, to manifest the loveliness which in Thy life we see.” The Rev. Parker’s hymn also contains a second line, “And ever as our need may be, supply, correct, forgive, that we may live to learn of Thee, and learn of Thee to live.” Together these two lines form a prayer that we would do well to make our own, a daily prayer for grace to keep our Lord’s word, and to manifest the love, the compassion, the kindness, the gentleness, and the holiness that he himself manifest.

Having prayed for grace, we step out each day in faith, trusting that God will supply what we need. We actively endeavor to live our lives in accordance with Jesus’ example and teaching, to become living copies of our Lord.

Here we can learn a lesson from the days of the great sailing ships. A sailing ship will drift at the mercy of the currents and tides of the sea unless the captain gives the order and the crew raises the sails, spread the canvas, and catch the wind. Then the ship will fly before the wind.

God moves us to do his will. He enables us to do his will. He works with us when we desire to do his will. If we are to fully experience the power of God’s presence in our lives, we must, however, cooperate with him. We must raise our sails, spread our canvas, and catch the wind. Then we too will fly before the wind, the wind of God’s breath, the wind of the Holy Spirit.

Silence is kept.

The Gospel Canticle

Open this link in a new tab to hear Bernadette Farrell - Owen Alstott’s setting of the Magnificat, “My Soul Proclaims the Greatness of the Lord.”

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
My spirit sings to God, my saving God,
Who on this day above all others favored me
And raised me up, a light for all to see.

Through me great deeds will God make manifest,
And all the earth will come to call me blest.
Unbounded love and mercy sure will I proclaim
For all who know and praise God's holy name.

God's mighty arm, protector of the just,
Will guard the weak and raise them from the dust.
But mighty kings will swiftly fall from thrones corrupt.
The strong brought low, the lowly lifted up.

Soon will the poor and hungry of the earth
Be richly blest, be given greater worth.
And Israel, as once foretold to Abraham,
Will live in peace throughout the promised land.

All glory be to God, Creator blest,
To Jesus Christ, God's love made manifest,
And to the Holy Spirit, gentle Comforter,
All glory be, both now and ever more.

Free Prayer

In silent or spontaneous prayer all bring before God the concerns of the day.

The Collect

O Lord our God,
you are always more ready to bestow
your good gifts upon us
than we are to seek them;
and more willing to give than we desire or deserve:
in our every need,
grant us the first and best of all your gifts,
the Spirit who makes us your children.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

And now, as our Saviour has taught us,
we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory
for ever and ever.
Amen.

Dismissal

1 Christ be near at either hand,
Christ behind, before me stand,
Christ with me where e’er I go,
Christ around, above, below.

2 Christ be in my heart and mind,
Christ within my soul enshrined.
Christ control my wayward heart;
Christ abide and ne’er depart.

[Instrumental interlude]

3 Christ my life and only way,
Christ my lantern night and day;
Christ be my unchanging friend,
guide and shepherd to the end.

The Lord be with you.
The Lord bless you.
Let us praise the Lord,
Thanks be to God.

May the Lord
Show His mercy upon you;
May the light
of His presence be your guide:
May He guard you and uphold you;
May His Spirit be ever by your side.
When you sleep,
May His angels watch over you;
When you wake,
May He fill you with His grace:
May you love Him
And serve Him all your days.
Then in heaven
May you see His face.
