Evening Prayer

The Service of Light

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
A light no darkness can extinguish.

singing our Alleluia
and dancing to the music of new life.
Pour out your Spirit upon us

of Jesus Christ our Risen Savior.

all glory be to you, Almighty Father,

Isaiah 55: 1-13 An Invitation to Abundant Life

Ho, everyone who thirsts,
come to the waters;
and you that have no money,
come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk
without money and without price.
Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
and your labour for that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.
Incline your ear, and come to me;
listen, so that you may live.
I will make with you an everlasting covenant,
my steadfast, sure love for David.
See, I made him a witness to the peoples,
a leader and commander for the peoples.
See, you shall call nations that you do not know,
and nations that do not know you shall run to you,
because of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel,
for he has glorified you.
Seek the Lord while he may be found,

The Homily

Without Price

This passage is one of my favorite passages from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. I did not pick it for today’s reading for that reason. I was looking for a different passage from Isaiah. But I could not pass this passage up.

At its heart the passage is both an invitation and a promise. It is an assurance of God’s graciousness toward us, one in which we can put our trust.

The passage is full of wonderful imagery. Mountains and hills singing, trees clapping their hands, dry thorns and briers transformed into fragrant evergreens. It has inspired several hymns and worship songs.

As Jesus told the disciples, “What is impossible for a mortal is not impossible for God.”

For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

God’s word is the word that God spoke through the prophets. God’s word is the living Word himself, Jesus Christ. God’s word is the word that God is speaking through his written Word, the Holy Bible this very moment. God’s word renews our minds, replaces our hearts of stone with hearts of flesh, transforms our lives, and heals our souls.

Like the winter snow and the spring rain God’s grace waters the soil of our lives. It gives life to the seed that God has planted there and causes them to sprout and grow and to bear fruit.

What is impossible for a mortal is not impossible for God.

Ho, everyone who thirsts come to the waters. God will quench your thirst. God will give you living water. Those who drink the water God gives them will never be thirsty. The water that God give them will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.

In the communion of the Holy Spirit (and of all the saints), let us commend ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ our Lord.

The Collect

Almighty God,
whose Son Jesus Christ is the resurrection and the life
of all who put their trust in him:
raise us, we pray, from the death of sin
to the life of righteousness;
that we may ever seek the things which are above,
where he reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
