Evening Prayer
The Service of Light Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

O Light whose splendor thrills and gladdens
with radiance brighter than the sun,
pure gleam of God's unending glory,
O Jesus, blest Anointed One;

to Father, Spirit, Son: one God.
In all life's brilliant, timeless moments,
let faithful voices sing your praise,

Thanksgiving
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
We praise you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the universe!
Your word brings on the dusk of evening,
your wisdom creates both night and day.
You determine the cycles of time,
arrange the succession of the seasons,
and establish the stars in their heavenly courses.
Lord of the starry hosts is your name.
Living and eternal God,
rule over us always.
Blessed be the Lord,
whose word makes evening fall.

The Proclamation of the Word
The Reading
John 7:10-18 Jesus at the Festival of Booths
But after his brothers had gone to the festival, then he also went, not publicly but as it were in secret. The Jews were looking for him at the festival and saying, “Where is he?” And there was considerable complaining about him among the crowds. While some were saying, “He is a good man,” others were saying, “No, he is deceiving the crowd.” Yet no one would speak openly about him for fear of the Jews.
About the middle of the festival Jesus went up into the temple and began to teach. The Jews were astonished at it, saying, “How does this man have such learning, when he has never been taught?” Then Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine but his who sent me. Anyone who resolves to do the will of God will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own. Those who speak on their own seek their own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and there is nothing false in him.

The Homily
The Abundant Life
We cannot on our own seek to do God’s will. Our natural inclination is to do what pleases us. God is gracious and loving, however, and, in the words of the apostle Paul, works in us to will and to do his good pleasure.
God’s good pleasure is that we recognize that Jesus’ teaching is not his own but God’s.
God’s good pleasure is that we believe in Jesus and not perish but have eternal life.
God’s good pleasure is that we recognize Jesus for who is—the light of the world—and that we follow Jesus and never walk in darkness but have the light of life.
God’s good pleasure is that we know Jesus is from above, from God, and that we do not die in our sins.
God’s good pleasure is that we continue in Jesus’ word and show ourselves to truly be his disciples.
God’s good pleasure is that we are no longer slaves to sin but enjoy the freedom from sin that Jesus alone can give.
God’s good pleasure is that we obey the new commandment that Jesus gave his disciples and love one another. Just as Jesus loved us, we should love one another and show the world that we are his disciples.
God’s good will is that those who believe in Jesus will do the works that Jesus did, that they will do greater works than Jesus’.
God’s good will is that we keep Jesus’ words and show our love for him,
God’s good pleasure is that we abide in Jesus as he abides in us, bear much fruit to God’s glory, and show that we are Jesus’ disciples.
God’s good pleasure is that we keep Jesus’ commandments and abide in his love.
God’s good pleasure is that we know God, the only true God, and Jesus whom he sent.
God’s good pleasure is that others will believe in Jesus through our word.
God’s good pleasure is that the love with which God loves Jesus will also be in us and Jesus will be in us too.
God’s good pleasure is that although we may not see Jesus in this life as the apostle saw him, we will come to believe in him and continue to believe in him.
God’s good pleasure is that we will come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and through believing will have life in his name.
