Evening Prayer 

The Service of Light

Jesus Christ is the light of the world.

O Jesus, Saviour of us all

Thanksgiving

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe,
creator of light and darkness.
In this holy season.
you renew your promise to reveal among us
the splendor of your glory,
enfleshed and visible to us in Jesus Christ your Son.
Through the prophets
you teach us to hope for his reign of peace,
Through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit,
you open our blindness to the glory of his presence.
Strengthen us in our weakness.
Support us in our stumbling efforts to your will
and free our tongues to sing your praise.
For to you all honour and blessing are due,
Now and for ever. Amen.

Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise replied, ‘No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

Homily

Are You Prepared? 

Several years ago I purchased three replicas of the clay oil lamps that were used during the time of Jesus’ earthly ministry. They are very small. They easily fit in the palm of my hand. They are roughly oval in shape, being narrower at one end than the other. The narrow end has a hole for the wick and the round end has an opening for filling the oil reservoir. They burn olive oil.

Due to the size of their oil reservoir carrying a flask of oil to refill the lamp would have been common sense at that time. It would had also been common sense to have carried an extra wick or two. Jesus’ audience would have known that.

Late at night there was little likelihood that the foolish bridesmaids would have found an oil dealer whose shop was open. They would have been forced to wake up an oil dealer or to wait until daylight when the shops opened. Jesus’ audience would have known that too.

While they may look foolish to us today, they looked even more foolish to Jesus’ audience.

Jesus’ point was that the foolish bridesmaids were not prepared at a time when they should have been prepared. At that time wedding feasts were typically held at night and the possibility that the bridegroom might be delayed was not out of the ordinary. A sensible bridesmaid would have normally made the preparations that they neglected to make.

Since we have no idea on what day and at what hour Jesus will return, the sensible thing for us to do is to be prepared for his coming in glory at this very moment and not be caught unprepared as were the foolish bridesmaids. They knew that the bridegroom would be arriving at any time and delays were not unusual. They knew that they should be prepared for any eventuality.

For a disciple of Jesus what then is the equivalent of having a flask of oil on hand if the bridegroom is delayed and so we can go in with him when he arrives? For a disciple of Jesus it is living the way that Jesus teaches us to live, keeping our faith in him and obeying his commandments. Obeying them has become second nature to us. We do not obey them perfunctorily because they are a religious duty that we must perform. Rather we obey them from our hearts out of love for our Lord.

At the same time we are awaiting expectantly for our Lord’s return. We are not anxiously looking for signs that herald his second coming, telling ourselves that as soon as I see evidence that he may be returning, we will get our act together. We are prepared for Jesus’ return at any moment.

Our God is a kindly God and is giving us time to put our house in order so to speak but he does expect us to make wise use of that time and not idle it away.

For an angel of peace to guide and protect us, let us pray to the Lord.

For a peaceful evening and a night free from sin, let us pray to the Lord.

For a Christian end to our lives and for all who have fallen asleep in Christ, let us pray to the Lord.

In the communion of the Holy Spirit (and of all the saints), let us commend ourselves and one another to the living God through Christ our Lord.

The Collect

Almighty God,
give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness
and put on the armour of light,
now in the time of this mortal life
In which Jesus came among us in great humility,
that on the last day,
when he shall come again in his glorious majesty
to judge the living and the dead,
we may rise to life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
